Instrument Lighting

Lost my instrument lighting on the 400E last week. Behind the gauges, the dash switches, and the console switches. All dead. From the list inside the fuse cover, it looks like three different fuses cover these things. I checked those fuses with my Ohm meter, and they seem to be good. I cleaned their contacts and reinserted them, nothing. I was going to check the rest, but it was raining and I'd had enough for one day. I never really drive at night, the only time I notice at all is when I leave for work in the morning when it's not quite light out. Any suggestions as to where else to look? I'm going to check and clean the rest of my fuses next chance I get. Any possibility it could be the headlight switch? Other that that and the fuses, I'm not too sure what else to check. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

make sure you didn't turn the thing in your dash by mistake to dim the inside lights... did that by mistake when i first got the car trying to reset the trip meter, felt silly when i figured it out...!

Should have mentioned that I checked that. Had a car before that had a dead spot in the light fader. Had to mess with the knob or jiggle it sometimes. Did nothing on the 400E.

Thanks shdoug, I'll pop the cluster out and check. I remember seeing that thread now that I look at it. Should have searched first.

99% sure it's the fuse in the red socket on the back of the cluster!

Exact same thing happened to me....

Definitely the Red Fuse in the instrument panel.

Well, I pulled my instrument cluster out last night, and the fuse was not the problem. There is a porcelain insulator, which I assume is part of the rheostat assembly, which has two flat metal conductors across the back. The end of one of those had seperated from it's mount. I soldered it back together, and all is well. I paid $3.40 for the fuse. Maybe I'll need it someday.
