Need a Tranny mechanic...

In the so.cal. area please.

All lower gears are very sketchy now. 1st clunks into gear. 2nd doesnt kick in. Reverse feels as if the e brake is on.

I will most likely need a complete swap or rebuild, but if you guys think a complete flush and seal change will work, Ill try it out. I need a cheap reliable mech. as soon as possible.

Thank you guys in advance.

How much do you expect for a rebuild bill?

i know a rebuild is gonna cost me over 1000, but I would'nt pay more than 1200.

Unless you know a better deal?

anyways...im thinking a fluid flush will make a significant difference. The fluid in there now is sooo dark.

How often do you service the transmission?

Also, you don't flush MB transmissions. You can completely drain the fluid from the pan and torque converter. Try doing that and changing the filter and pan gasket. Fill it with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, I do this every 25k-30k miles and I've never had to rebuild one.

Alright...I got the pan off...drained it, replaced to filter, and put the pan back on.

Now The thing leaks like crazy.

As I was tightening the bolts, it seemed like they just kept spinning. I dont think they were stripped. My dad was telling me about the bolts on an old car of his being 1-time-use-only. Just curious if anyone else has had to replace the bolts mounting the pan after an ATF change. If the mounting holes are stripping im screwd because I have no experience in tapping them....

I have never had that problem. But I sent you an email with the info about a rebuilt transmission. Just give the guy a call he has 4 of them sitting in his house. He will ship COD.

It's probably leaking because you've used synthetic trans oil. Synthetic lubricates fine but because they're composed of smaller mollecules it gets into places convetional fluids can't, especially old seals and gaskets which have been familiar with conventional trans fluid for the better part of their lives.

I got a new seal with the filter kit. I used dextron III, and i dont think that would hae been the problem. I went under the car again and I hope I missed a bolt. Because one of them was REALLY loose. I really hope it wasnt loose because of vibration or anything. I tightened it up and the leaking stopped. Thanks again for all your help guys.

Absolutely not true.

First, did you drain the torque converter?

It is probably leaking because (1) you did not replace the gasket.,

More likely, you overtightened....did you read the torque specifications for the tans pan bolts? They should only be lightly toghtened, you probably also ruined your pan btw...

I've been using M1 Synthetic ATF in all my cars, no leaks whatsoever. Also, MB reccomends it/requires it. So no, you're not leaking because of the fluid.

Take it to Transmeister in Orange, CA. (714 532-1871 Ted Reich) Ted is a very honest guy. He will tell you what is wrong and fix it right. He only works on Mercedes Benz transmissions. If he rebuilds it he will give you a 2 year / 24 month warranty.

It looks like you have a nice car. My only advise is dont mess around with a cheap deal, take it to a compentent trans guy that will stand behind his work you won't be sorry.

Ted has rebuilt 2 transmissions for me a 1986 300E and a 1984 500SL.

Tell him Terry Adams sent you.

Good Luck
