W124 The Best Mercedes Ever ?????????
I walked into my MB dealer the other day looking for a couple of bulbs, as soon as I told the parts guy the model of car (1993 W124 coupe) he went all dewey eyed on me.
"Best Mercedes ever", he said "The only Merc I would ever own, the build quality on them was phenomenal".
The only Merc he would own? Out of ALL of them?![crazy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/crazy.gif)
Maybe he was just a major W124 fan, then I remember taking ma to a couple of car dealers in my W124 coupe a few years ago, both car salesmen told me I had their favourite car - of all time.
Now I like my W124, its the only car I have known to have a laminated rear window, but have many times thought of upping the game to a CL or something older like a W111 coupe.
As this is my first and only ever Mercedes (so far) I would like to draw on the experience of others who have owned other models.
Is the W124 that good? Am I really driving the finest MB has ever built?

A w124, w202, and a few bimmers
Yeah, I used to own a 190e... and I also have a c230k... w124 pwns both of them.. though the w201 was close.
the w124 is actually better in terms of build quality than my bimmers. Performance, its close, but not so much.

Absolutely! ![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
Jump around to the other model sections of this forum and see what you think. It seems like the passion is different somehow. It's about the way the other cars are fast, or impressive, or look cool with 22" Rims, or something other than the SOUL of the car that people really like. The W124 is not really astounding in any one area that I can put my finger on. It's just something about the whole package that makes it truly unique and something to be treasured, in spite of a few faults.
YES, it's the easily the best MB, and more.

I did not need to read this thread......![mercy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/mecry.gif)
My 1991 300CE coupe went to a new home just yesterday. I will certainly miss that car. It was my "dream car" when it came to the U.S. Market in 1988, it it took me several years to aquire an outstanding example.
The new owner is a lucky man indeed.
Enjoy your W124 coupe.

depends whos asking
short answer is- for me, YES. a resounding capital letters YES.
its not a perfect car; better headlights (euro headlights easily remedy this) better stereo (aftermarket solves this) and a 5 speed (also possible in auto or manual) and i have my perfect car. i like the way it drives and conducts itself. i like its style and economy and ease of maintenance.
its a do everything car that does everything well but doest do a touchdown dance in the end zone.
if you want a speedy fast car, you can use it for that, but there are better cars for that.
if you want a car to beat around the racetrack, you can use it for that, but there are better cars for that.
if you want to fake like youre a baller (wrong car d!ldo) you can use it for that, but theres plenty of people gonna laugh at you, and many who will give you props too. there are better cars for that.
same thing for just about anything you can think of car wise.
but it will do everything you ask. with imperious ease.

I bought my 300CE new in May of 1988..............was worth $53K+ at the time and to me is now worth much more in the sense of style and overall build quality.
If you have a coupe it's a keeper and worth investment.

its so true when ever i goto a junk yard to pull parts off the benz always look like they've been in a serious accident, rarely are they ever there because they've stopped working.

Interesting comments from everyone, thanks to all. Maybe I should have asked what is better than a W124.........

The opinion expressed in the title of this thread is typically held by those who've never owned the later models.

there is at least one thread in this forum with posts from numerous people who have owned one, two, or all three E classes, and i think almost every one of those people felt that as far as build quality goes, the 124 wins. what do you expect when in todays dollars the 124 costs more than the newer models, even though they come with navi and all the rest of it? built to a price point ftl.
besides, there's a reason so many people on the 124 forum own a lot of other cars including AMG's, porsche's, etc. but still own a 124.
if you're talking strictly amenities a 124 obviously won't compare to a 211, but in terms of how well the cars have been put together, let's be honest...
