I'm still fiddling with the idea.
Just picked up a more discrete Datsun 280ZX vent that fits about flush with the hood.
I'm laying them out prior to taking saw into hand and do the unthinkable !!!!

Good thing is hoods are relatively inexpensive and I'm still planning for a complete respray.

How's yout TT install coming along ?

I can understand the hood mod being cheap to experiment with but I think you're too worried about the heat thing. Factory turbocharged Mercs don't need vents (CL65, S600 etc).

One of the guys up on 500E forum has been working on this in Japan and came up with this application. Apparently it is working pretty well. We are looking at it but it will require moving one of the hood structural members to apply.

Sort of like you're in "stereo"...

The vents above are Z-34 Lumina's....also picked up only one side of a Sunbird Turbo louver, various sets of Datsun 280Z(X) louvers and some stainless steel Mack truck stuff.

What is your opinion on the location of the "Japan 500E" location?
Wouldn't you think moved back a bit would be in a better low pressure area?

Not concerned in my case with engine operating temps which even in the recent 95 degree ambient has stayed around 90C, but more in the heat buildup from the turbos.
Worried about long term breakdown of components due to the higher then stock temps !!

Those are hood vents I might be able to live...but I am still to thinking hood vents must go in with some other body mod...AMG body kit or 500E body????,,,is that a finished hood or just photoshop...

The vents are not for show......

The applications being discussed are not on stock engines.
Heat destroys components and shortens life of everything under the hood.

Modified engines generate a much higher engine bay temp, so it is prudent to consider some form of heat extraction.

The Japan 500E is not a photochop and is a working 500E hood. I assume the reason for the location is that it would pour hot air away from the radiator and intercooler area.

My only concern with pushing the vents toward the back that far is that you might just end up with an INTAKE issue rather than venting air out. The pressure area at the back of these 124s are really conducive to a rear intake from what I have seen at speed.

It would be VERY interesting to pick up a cheap junkyard hood and cut vents in that area and put in some fins that would show air flow direction at speed. The model you would want to use would be to cut the slots, put a tray a couple of inches below surface level and vent it to the motor side. Put in a putty with very light aluminum strips sticking up. The air flow will point them in its direction.

No, we are driving a sports sedan designed to hold a 4 or 6 cylinder motor with 177 or so HP. We are, however running either shoehorned 320HP to 400HP V8s or Forced Air 300HP Straight 6s that are generating 200 degrees more engine compartment heat than the original design intended.

We are also driving them in an environment that requires AC to be run full blast due to R134 conversion from more efficient R12. Again, more generated heat in the engine compartment.

What I was going to do before final placement was to tape 6" lengths of yarn across the hood, sort of a wanna be chia pet, and observe the direction of the yarn to determine positive or negative pressure areas.
Also consider the structural bracing issue.

First set that I will try are from a 75-79 Datsun 280Z non turbo car.
Set includes one drip pan that I'll install on the intake/driver's side.
Placement will be on the low section of the hood, farther back then the posted 500E example, more over the turbos.
Location will be in the area where Mosselman installed the extractors on the 300CE Silver Arrow.

Probably get it done when the weather gets a bit cooler.
Should be an easy install.

Most don't consider that the average summer ambient temp in Europe or the U.K. is substantially lower then just about anywhere in the USA.
Time when the W124 was being developed, desert testing wasn't like they do now !!!

Soooooo.....Back to the vents/extractors

I decided this will probably be the approximate location for my heat extraction purposes.

Mc Bear....I'm leaning toward moving to the higher section of the hood...your opinion appreciated !

So far I've also picked the 280Z which I agree looks the best and is more "period".

Have the Z-34 Luminas which are the large "gill" type.

Another set of 280ZX Turbo which will sit almost flat, but one side has a naca style intake which doesn't go.

One side of a Sunbird turbo which is a higher louver.

And finally a set of 4"W x 17" long stainless steel Mack truck louvers which would look great on a rat rod.

I'll probably go with the 280Z, paint them to match, lay them on the hood to find final position, take some pix that I can stare at before I start cutting.

If only you could find out the dimensions without buying them....
