1995 E320 Wagon
95 E320 Wagon springs/shocks
I am getting a 95 E320 wagon soon and of course must do some mods
ASAP.. I know that I can get springs and Struts for the front.. The rear
has the SLS. Does it work with aftermarket springs?? can it be converted to a
standard shock/ spring combo?? i am gong to fabricate a new rear section
for the exhaust. Do intake and exhaust mods give a bit more power or not?
any help is appreciated

Marc, you'll find lots-o-info on wagon suspension here.
When you get the car you'll find the factory 3.2 torque monster pulls rather well against ANY six out there. Guys here are not too engine "mod" nutty. Anything past your standard cold-air intake and high-flow exhaust tweaks are marketed to the tuner crowd, not Mercedes owners. The aftermarket is very limited looking for "Superchips" or Nitrous kit products. Mercedes is a whole different world.
You can spend $300 modding her for noise and 5 HP. Feel free to tweak the suspension and remove factory engineered leveling and safety features. (What do those Germans know anyway?)
Save your bucks for getting it tight and right, then review any major mod carefully.

Sure, lower the front by putting in #1 spring pads and you'll have the 'aufstand' look. That would be the cheapest and easiest way.
Its a bit involved (but easily done) to replace the rear SLS with conventional shocks.... worst is changing to a non-SLS pump on the engine. Does your SLS not treat you well tho?

Its easy to change out the SLS units to conventional E320 shocks and springs.
The tough part is replacing the SLS/steering pump to one that is for a car without the SLS specific pump. I don't think you can just plug off the SLS fluid lines.

Which shocks do I use? Do I use the standard LCAs?
The pump is easy. I have a standard W124 Power Steering Pump that will directly swap onto the motor to do away with the tandem pump.

If you have the right pump, then yes, it can be easy. Just cap off the lines or take them out altogether then.
I would use Bilsteins if you are asking me my opinion. Whatever fits will work though.

Sure they will work...but perhaps HD shocks in a wagon makes more sense?
Adjustable Konis are a bit overkill no? But if you have them already use them. At the time I was thinking of deleting my rear SLS there were no Koni adjustables for the 500E...but I did put them on the fronts of my car. They really are nice for track and auto-x days.

no, afaik they won't fit on an sls kombi...it seems that in addition to the totally different physical dimensions, the sls shocks mount w/ two bolts on the bottom on either side of the shock body. conventional shocks like those used on the sedan, have a single bottom bushing in eyelet configuration that takes a single mounting bolt. if you go to any of the online vendors like buymbparts, you will see that they look nothing alike...

To retain the SLS, you could buy the H&R lowering spring set made for the wagon (check their site), then reset the SLS linkage to accommodate the new height. I sold a set of these recently, wife didn't understand the "need" for them
