turning off '87 300TDt VACUUM help
my 87 300tdt is having difficulty turning off. I drive the car, pull into the driveway, put the car in park, turn the ignition off, pull the key out, and about 3-5seconds later the engine turns off.
I replaced the valve when this problem originally started happening, and then it was fine for about a month, now this.
the only thing that happened was that I had the transmission rebuilt (very reputable shop, they have rebuilt over 20 trannys for me, 8 of these 300tdt trannys).
I know there is a electric kickdown switch under the gas pedal, and the rest of the system is vac and cable operated, but the kickdown doesnt always work when im driving... I have had 3 of these cars and driven over 600,000 miles total on them, and i have never had an issue like this..

Lock your doors. inside or outside with a key. never took the time to really figure out the problem, but its got something to do with the vacuum leak somewhere.
300tdt, nice. turbo wagon? id like to see pics of that.

On my car the locks are controlled by a vacuum pump under the passenger rear seat, independent of the ignition one. On my last 300tdt when i had the problem I hooked up one of those motors to a toggle switch and a "T" connector to the fuel shut off valve.. hit the switch and it kills the engine.. but I really just want to have this solved.... and mercedes doesnt make it easy with all of those fragile tubes running around the engine.. the leak could be anywhere.......
the gray one is my 87 300TD (turbo diesel 3.0L auto, 133k) the gold one is a 92 300TE 4matic 260k.
The last 87 300TD I had until 475,000 miles, mostly maintance free, 3 or 4 transmissions, did the exhaust once (under recall along with a new turbo at 215,000 miles, 3 alternators, 2 startes, glow plugs once, 5 batteries, and tons of tires)... original fuel pump though! LOVE DIESEL
.. right now shes still running her RONAL R9s, black with a polished lip, kickin it ole'school![](http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b301/hellspcangel911/Rims/Ronal/IMG_2672.jpg)

1) see if locking the door helps, lock and let sit a second. press the gas little and usually itll kick off (for me at least)
2) go online and order a few rolls of vacuum tubing and start replacing. make sure you get the right ones though. // Or have a shop do it for you.
haha score

Problem solved
so it turns out that the valve i replaced a few months ago.. the actuator that shuts the diesel off to the engine.. well the nipple on top that the line connects to broke off.. so when the key turned off the there was a vac leak ontop of the valve.. the reason for this is that the new replacement valves are made from plastic and have the nipple on the top while the originals are metal and have the nipple on the side towards the driver side.
i spoke to a diesel tech that told me the plastic ones hold up fine for tens of thousands of miles, but if you are constantly tinkering with your engine then its very easy to accidentally snag the vac line and break the plastic nipple... 20 minutes later i had a NOS metal valve installed and it was turning off like it was supposed to.
I also used this opportunity to disconnect the line to the EGR valve.. shif a bit better, better MPG and better for the long haul..
hope this helps someone else later on.
