How to Change an Air Filter?

hello , I just recently bought a 1987 300E. I want to check/change the air filter but I've found no guides or manual's on this. I know where the air housing box is (big black cylindrical thing) and Ive tried to open it with no success. Anyone have a straight forward process to do this?

I think it's got 2 bolts u have to take out, plus the clips all around the side

There are actually four bolts that connect the top cover of the air box to the bottom.

After that you will need to remove roughly I think 6-7 claps that hold the box together on the sides. It's an very easy process.

Good Luck.

If you choose to replace the filter and go with say an K&N here's the part number. E-2867

I've always thought the 6 clamps would have been adequate, but the extra 4 bolts is just amazing. These cars could be involved in a head-on at 140 MPH on the Autobahn and that air filter is not going anywhere! Or maybe they have a problem with air filter theft in Germany?

They need the bolts due to the incredible vacuum produced by the intake. With just the flip retainers holding it down the lid may get sucked through lodging somewhere in the exhaust circuit.

yeek, some people ought to be arrested if seen holding a spanner, sounds like one them put your airbox on last. Have a look at your mixture adjusting screw while you're fixing the airbox - one of those spanner fiends had been playing with my mixture screw when i got my car and they busted the whole housing(probably using force on a seized screw)

One of my screws was stripped, causing me to be unable to open the airflow box. With a little bit of force and the help of my brother, we kind of broke the bottom of where the stripped screw was. I know not to use that screw, but hey, atleast I can change my air filter. Or you could just purchase a new box too, or an aftermarket air intake. There is always a few options.

i dont like the aftermarket air intake i see for this car it really dose not help in power or air flow from what i see or read. besides that part of the car is open and you can see all the ugly parts that the air box covers.

what is the hose coming out of it? I have all the bolts and clips undone and still having trouble getting it open. Do I need to remove this hose...?

EDIT: removed the hose....

So there is a pool of oil in the bottom of the pan....?

That oil has collected from the vapor that has leaked past your cylinders, called "Blow by". Normally it doesn't collect. You could have a plugged PCV valve or excessive cylinder wear. Normally it doesn't cause a problem unless your spark plugs are fouling out and misfiring. I would wipe the oil up and see how long it takes to come back. Chances are it has been there for a very long time.
