Bought an AMG 3.6 engine, what next?

Hi Guys,

I just bought a complete AMG 3.6 engine with wiring harness & ECU from a wrecked C36, just wondering if anyone of you guys can tell me what parts are also needed to transplant it onto a W124 with a M103 engine, somebody suggested fuel pump, belly pan, air box, flywheel..........

Thanks

And to stay on topic, i believe that the engine and transmission does pair up and no major work is really necessary. Enjoy the car!

If you pick up a copy of The Mercedes Bible, I'm assuming it's Neils wagon that's described in there regarding the engine swap. There are more parts required than the engine and ecu listed in his parts required. In addition to what you mention I recall the rear axle being on that list. If I remember, when I go home for lunch, I'll bring the book back with me and scan the page(s).

Here's the list of parts taken from the book:
1995 C36 engine, control units and OBD II interface
1995 C36 transmission modified to accept mechanical speedometer
1993 E320station wagon ABS control unit system
1995 C36 over-voltage protection relay
1995 C36 fuel pump relay
1993 E320 station wagon fuel cooler
1993 E320 station wagon air conditioning manifold assembly
1995 C36 A/C compressor bracket assembly
1995 C36 differential (2.87:1)
Modified driveshaft to accept larger flange from large case diff
1993 E320 station wagon heater hoses
1995 C36 twin catalytic converters with dual oxygen sensors and pipes modified to fit, center resonator removed and a Brabus rear muffler installed.

This is copied directly out of the Mercedes Owners Bible.
I was going to do the same install originally in my cabrio, but then the twin turbo systems came available.
Hope it helps.

Oh yes it is (I thought panto season was over?)

The body kit was optional on all British E36s.

The engine looks much like the 320 lump.

I was thinking of doing the same thing to my wagon. In fact I believe that Neil's wagon was my inspiration, if his is the black one I have seen, when doing searches on the subject. I have tried to PM him before last year about his engine swap, but never got any replies. But still going to try and attempt this, hopefully it works out.

You could order them without. Theres an example on 500Ecstasy. It shipped with 17 inch Aero IIs, an AMG modified interior, and the 3.6 m104.

Awesome! Did you find this in the mbworld marketplace? Saw a 36 amg engine for sale there a few weeks ago, if only I wasn't poor.

Nice purchase.

Not from Ebay!

It wasn't the one on ebay from Germany, he wants 3500 Euros, also the shipping would have bankrupted me! I got it in Canada, as a matter of fact, he shipped me two, to pick and choose parts from

Do you guys know if W124 differential can be swapped with W202 differential?

Warning on used or totaled vehicle engines...

That's a great find. What kind of damage did the donor(s) suffer? front or rear end collission? I've seen a few on ebay last summer.

I considered "the swap" at one time, but was told that some times even in the most minor collissions, most engines get overheated, due to cooling system damages, and the engines being left on even for a few minutes during the scene of the accident, they eventually die out due to overheating.

Is you mechanic going to rebuild or replace any parts on the donor(s) engine, maybe do a little maintenance, or just swap it?

The last time I researched this, you will need the ASR Driveline System. Research the archives, I had a short-term memory from last year.
