Removing Wood Console Around Shifter

Hey guys,

Recently got a new (at least to me) '93 300ce. Love the car, but need to remove the wood around the shifter to replace the mirrow switch, and eventually send the wood to NC to be refinished. I removed the the two screws in the ashtray, and I can wiggle the ashtray 1/2 way out. Don't know if I should continue down this path or not, don't want to break ashtray, plus I figured that I better ask if I what I am doing is correct.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Bob

Stop!

There is a screw on the opposite side under the little carpet on the console. Remove that screw and then lift very carefully. There are two "hooks" under the ashtray. You will figure it out once you are there. Good luck!

Sorry to be a pest, but what do you mean by opposite side. I have, underneath my armrest, a 'cubbyhole, that can be closed by a piece of sliding wood. In there, there are 2 screws.

Thanks again

Yep yep. Some of the newer cars and the ce's come with the "cubby hole" instead of the carpet. I'm not sure what to do here either. If the two screws are VERY close to the wood panel then take em out. You should be able to lift up the wood panel (kind of a big, smooth, circular 90 degree angle). The panel can only be taken out once it is perpindicular to the ground. But regarding those screws... eek... I'm not sure how to even do this on my G320. I'd assume its the same though...

Someone with a "cubby hole" has gotta help this guy out !!!

he he, well, good luck sir!

Dooode...just remove the cubby (should be a screw right in front inside the cubby) maybe 2 , my 500E has 1 screw...then you can remove the one screw that holds on the shifter console, also at the same location at the bottom of the shifter under the storage compartment (cubby). Then lift the shifter peice up from the rear and the 2 hooks at the top of the shifter console will pivot. The various switches will pop their plugs as you lift up...its OK.

You'll laugh when you see how easy it is....but first time is always confusing if you haven't seen or done it yet.

Not trying to threadjack, but what does it cost to get the wood redone?

Depends on how bad your wood piece is...scratches are cheaper to fix than cracked clearcoat. The shifter piece shouldn't be over $100 to repair...you can buy a brand new piece for maybe $150....but its a toss up if the new stuff matches your existing.

In fact, if all you have is scratched clearcoat, buff it out with auto stuff and polish it with a wax. That's waht I did on a few pieces.
