I'm a huge fan of the AMG Hammer. I remember reading the road tests of this beast way back when during my high school years. Here is an 80's sedan that can outaccelerate an E39 M5 or W210 E55!

I was in the last three offers, tried to negotiate a mid forties price with the seller but to no avail.
Not interested anymore.

Really interested in the coupe he owns..

I was thinking his fantasy is more of a buyer with more money than sense but who knows, someone paid an obscene amount for it when it was new so why not now. It would have been great to see it go to an enthusiast who would share the experience though..

I didn't look at the listing this time but if the VIN is showing Canada then it's the VIN for the 300TE diesel that he owns that was converted to a Hammer for the original owner by Westmont.

The W124 was done by BHMA as was the coupe he owns.

Yes, he has three Hammers, one in each body style..

And he will continue to have three until the market improves...

Oh man I remember that company back in the day. I use to order their catalogs just to drool over it since I was only a kid and wanted a Hammer so bad!

When I was in 2nd grade (I believe it was 1989), my dad brought home a brand spankin new 300E from Downtown LA motors and man was I in love. I knew of the Hammer but there was no way I was gonna be able to convince my dad to build one of these..lol, so I collected pictures of them instead and wished I had one. Til this day I still itch for one and I'd definitely pay money for that 87!!!

If he could afford three of these cars, it doesn't sound like he is a 'motivated' seller.

I don't think he's ever likely to get a price in the 60's or 70's even if the economy and the market do go up.

If it goes down more, he may need to unload for less than he wants, but in that climate, it will only be to a real MB enthusiast, who still hapens to have money.

AMG HAMMER
If you ask me its worth $1,000,000. Who ever wants one Wants it because there was only 13 real ones built. You cant compare it to others performance for the money. And the main reason I think its worth $1,000,000 is because I own one, lol.

You and I are in agreement, there!
My '92 500E, with about 55,000 miles, is probably worth about $15K on the market. However, I wouldn't consider many other cars to be as significant or well-built.
I'll keep it for that reason.

Conversely, our Hammer seller seems neither to want to keep it at any cost, nor sell it at market value. Perhaps he has merely lost interest, or it is only worthwhile to sell the car if he gets big bucks for it.

BTW MB Specialist: Treat us to some pics of your Hammer and its history. Thx.

AMG HAMMER
I stole it off of ebay from Topeka Kansas with a butchered in 119 5.0 ltr. Right after I won it a guy from Seattle Washington emailed me with an original Hammer engine and transmission for more then I payed the for the car. After receiving the engine I had determined it was the original engin thet came out of the car to begin with. Some circle hu? Well my **** German machinist and I agreed I shouldnt just throw it together So after two years I finially got head gaskets and the short block is ready to assemble. When I got it I was going to put a Z06 Vette engine in it. IN all my years of owning an MB repair shop I never new what one was. Thats the problem with figuring out the true value of one. When Mercedes AMG devision comes out with a new Hammer then the value will hit the moon.

The magical number of "13" and the term "real ones" applies to the few that were built by AMG of Germany. This car is not one of those, this is a US built vehicle and there are many of them built by BHMA and Westmont, way more than 13.

One of the original 13, would be worth the asking price, but this car is just a plain old ex-diesel car that was put together with "parts" here in the US. Still rare and has value, not to the tune of 40k IMO, but that motor alone is worth the high price that some are willing to pay for the vehicle.

US built AMG vehicles are very difficult to determine installed options unless you have the actual sales invoice. The AMG motors were shipped from Germany complete and dropped into the converted cars. No way to determine if this engine you just bought is the original from the car or not, even the sales invoice didn't have a block number on it, just a motor description and installed options.

AMG HAMMER
I didnt have time to read all of what you just posted but

The "real" Hammers are 124 bodies with duck tails. As per Hartmut (the man who built them) Mine was the first US built Hammer and not all hammers where built in Germany. There are a lot of hammer engines installed in other bodies that are questionably called hammers.

The engine I boiught Had the titled owners name all over the plastic bags that the small parts where in. And the previous owner told me the engine swap was done at the same shop in Chicago that the engine was bought from.

Duck tail was optional and the car could be ordered anyway you wanted. I would agree that most had the duck tail, but do see posted picture.

You quoted a specific number "13" which is a number related to "real" Hammers, to me a "real" hammer is one built by AMG of Germany, not pieced together by distributors in the USA. Regardless of whether or not anyone agrees with my opinion in that regard, "Hammers" built in the US, plus their German counterparts total way more than 13. BHMA built more than 20 of them and thats just what I recall from my past dealings with them, that wouldn't include Westmont either, as I never directly dealt with them.

The pictures below are of one of the original 13 made German AMG "Hammer's", notice the lack of duck tail.

That sounds like good evidence of where the motor came from. Nice find.

I dunno, Rik.

You ARE the authority on W124 AMGs , but that photo could be a metal, faired-in, duktail on there...

I would have to agree. The photo does look as if there is a ducktail mounted. Look at the right of the photo. Stock trunks do not look nearly that sharp...
