Just bought an 87 260E

$710

It has a 300E badge...not sure why...VIN check clearly shows 260E and only after 90 I believe did they use 300E-2.6

1) Broken headlight...easy fix -- Don't like US headlights anyway...

2) Gonna put my current Lorinsors on the car once I get my Monoblock II's on the wagon.

3) Interior is nice, just very dusty and dirty...A good few hours cleaning and it will be perfect.

4) Paint will look great after a wash, buff and maybe claybar

5) Engine has 80k miles on it and runs, but "chugs" it says....I'm sure with a tuneup it will be great. Low miles

6) For the $710 I paid for it...I'm fine putting some money into getting it right. Of course...it could have an elusive irritating rough idle

I wanted another w124 for a daily driver so I can keep the miles down on the wagon. Finally found one!
I'll take some better pictures once I get the car home (Registration has expired since 2007 on it so gotta get a trailer for it as its a police impound)

Just tow it home with the TE and show off the utility of the e-class wagon.

Is your trunk deck lid messed up too? I can sell you mine soon if you want as Im uprgrading to a 93 style one soon.

It has rhino lines sprayed on the inside to reduce vibration of subs and road noise. needs paint though.

Forgot to mention it has a small dent in the right front fender too from whatever it hit...There were like two black 300E's at the junkyard so I'll swap it out real cheap.

^Rivcal...sorry I am lost

It looks like the trunk has a gap when shut. Just curious if it was an optical illusion, or if its really messed up.

Saw this car on ebay...let us know how it turns out. Looks like a decent price unless the tranny or engine has major issues.

Ah gotcha. Yea I saw that too...but its the same on both sides..so it may not be closed fully. Not sure. If the guy emails me back I'm gonna go and check it out tomorrow before I commit any money. He describes it as in good shape...so we will see when I get down there what the real deal is.

Transmission can't be bad at 80k miles unless someone never replaced the oil or filter...Engine I am sure can be fixable at that mileage again. Might need a top end overhaul though.

EDIT: Just looked and removal of the front fender looks very straightforward. Perfect.

--

It also looks like the trunk lid can be adjusted (assuming of course its not bent) MB CD # 88-520. PM me of course if you want more info.

lots of cars
I saw a burgandy 300e at the junkyard for $900 but i don't really need or have the space for another car. It had 390k on it and a brown interior lol.... but it was pretty clean.

Saw the car today. Looks totally salvageable with a little TLC. Paint looks really nice when the dust is wiped away. Wash, Wax and a claybar and I bet it will shine
Engine is very dusty, but the car was running while I took the pictures...Looks like a misfire-type shake although it could be mounts because the actual engine sound wasn't too bad.

The ABS light could be just the OVP...had the same light when I got my 300TE originally. I'll head down tomorrow and swap it out with the spare I have.

Overall the car is just dirty...but its a dirty that can be cleaned up with a little TLC

Gonna pick the car up tomorrow and we will see what a good clean can do.

Also Question: If you look at the trunk lid...it has some lines in the paint on both sides...anybody know what the heck they are?

Just use some 3M buffing compound on those lines (or the whole car for that matter) and they should magically disappear.

The lines on the trunk look like residue from tape.

Exactly what I was gonna say. Looks like the trunk might not have stayed shut on its own at one point.

Should buff right, unless it took paint off when it was removed.

Got her!

Okay....A few problems. Firstly engine has pretty much no power at all. Tailgate does not seem to want to shut at all -- No idea how the guys at the place managed to get it to shut....Tried everything and it just won't latch at all.

Onto the power -- Engine sounds very strong, but its definitely misfiring all the time...I know for sure one of the plugs is bad as pulling it while the car was running made close to no difference. So a fresh set of plugs is coming up soon. Got a set of spark plugs too I'll swap.

Valve cover gasket is totally gone as well. Engine bay is covered in oil....
Idle air hoses are rock hard....
Rear tail right is out for night driving...brake light works though.
ABS Light was solved after we saw OVP fuse was done for (Swapped the fuse with the OVP I brought with me....Different Unit though...so gonna buy one for good measure.)

Odometer is broken....so not sure what the mileage is...but I don't expect it to be very high based on service records.

Few good things!
Engine sounds real strong in general.
Dash has no cracks in it!
Transmission smooth!
Converted to R134 by MB -- got a sticker on it
Seats are great...springs are a little worn though compared to my TE's.

--

Do the 87 models have an alarm system?
Do I need to do anything special to check the mixture due to the fact it does not have the diagnostic unit near the battery? Car is Californian if that makes any difference.

Take some pictures tomorrow as its dark now.

I'm glad I know the M103 engine reasonably well! This is one the reasons I opted to buy the car! Buy what you know right

Overall I am happy for the purchase. Needs some TLC for sure. Car make this as the daily driver and keep the TE for the weekends

Great find! I'm sure it's gonna run forever! I got lucky on mine too... it was serviced all the time and found all the service records in the trunk. I've had my car almost 7 years now...

Well here was half the engine problems

Not surprised it barely ran with gaps like these!
Put some H9DC's in and it now idles perfectly....still reallyyyyyyyyyy slow though....But that is day one.

Here's after the wash. Paint still needs a buff and claybar though.

nice find man, and kudos for giving it its life back... when that thing first hit the streets 20 years ago can you imagine how much respect it got. put it back on its pedestal!

i found a black one at a used car lot that has amg rear and sides, and a different front bumper than stock, but not amg. you got me thinking about taking it on a test drive now...

I found a business card in the car...going to shoot the lady an email through the company and see if I can get any information on the car.
...I found a small diamond ear-ring in the glovebox...so that's my selling point
Any information or history on the car is worth more than the ear-ring.

Yeh tint looks bad...What would you use to get the tint off?
Paint -- Good idea!

I took off the tint on my front windows with a razor but only to lift the film so i could pull it off with my finger because if you try to use the razor on glass it's going to scratch it. I removed the adhesive by putting some lacquer thinner on a cloth or you can use goo off.

Perfect, thanks I'll try it.

---

The seats in comparison to my wagon feel alot harder and less squishy...It seems like they are kinda dried out?...Think they are recoverable or is it just a "gotta-live-with-it-or-replace" kinda thing?

I may also give that bumper paint a go on my wagon too...although its nowhere near as faded as the 260E. I still have my old S class grill...gonna swap that in place of the horrible yellow grill insert that is currently in.

Did a compression test

190psi across all 6 cylinders. GREAT

I think I may have also found a CIS adapter to the fuel pressure gauge that we have...!! Should be able to test my 300TE and the 260E with it! Sweet

Nice steal.

Definitely plan on a complete tuneup and oil change on ANY car you buy. Your "low power" maybe something as simple as a clogged air or fuel filter.

Good luck with it.

Which salvage yards are you guys finding 124s in. Admittedly I havent been parts hunting in one in a long time, but I only used to see 116s and 114s there. Very seldom did I see even a 123, let alone a 126, nevermind a 124.
