93 300SD or a 97 E 300D
I'm looking at the two cars listed above.
I keep reading that the 93 is one of the last over engineered Mercedes. which to me implies that it is a better built car then the 97.
Is this true?
List price is 2k difference - although i'm sure i could talk them bother down (6k for the 93 and 8k for the 97).
93 has 50k more miles.
Is that enough info for you guys to help me?

E320 300SD 300SDL
1993 300SD = head cracker and rod bender, if the engine the crank shaft and cylinder head has not been replaced, great car lots of power smooth and its an S class so its HUGE and TURBOCHARGED!

All W140 diesels got the rod bender 3.5L engine. Thought to be the worst engine MB made. There was a replacement crate motor made in very late 95 that was "thought" to have fixed the rod problem. Regardless, it is an expensive chassis to maintain and it computers are +16 years old. It won't get cheaper to own......
The 97 has th 606.912 NON turbocharged engine. Very relialbe but also slow off the line. Drives nice but wont win a race unless lined up against a NA 300D or 240D. Was the first year of the 722.6 electronic 5 spd trans. Has some probs with trans seals and conductor plates. If it was well maintain the harness seal should at elast have been replaced. That said, its a nice car.
$8k is prob too much unless it only has 100k miles. Be patient and look for a 98-99 turbo'd W210 for the same cost.

Not sure if the fix worked for others but it definitely worked on mine IMO.
I even modified the turbo to spool up sooner so she pulls much faster than most. Runs completely smoke free no matter how hard you stomp on her.

W126 300SD Comfortable smooth and big have mild sport's car like handling and the bullet proof engine good gas mileage
W126 300SDL Bigger than the 300SD fast smooth mild sport like car handling very good gas mileage, WARNING Potential cylinder head crack to learn more Wikipeda OM603
W124 300D Smaller the fastest diesel in the 80's, Very agile have the same head crack problem VERY GOOD GAS MILEAGE
W124 2.5 Turbo, less powerful, fast, sounds cooler, very reliable, no cylinder head crack problem and the BEST GAS MILEAGE....
