PITA?

Would removing the instrument cluster and swapping the face gauges be a big pita, or just a time consuming project?

Can anyone speak from experience on this one?

First: I never done it myself but I know a guy who knows a guy....

By swapping you mean like make them white, red, orange...whatever, right?
Seriously it is a bit PITA. A friend of mine have done it with AMG whites and he needed to take off all the needles from the face (speed, RPM, Fuel. etc) It was a total disaster, he managed at the end of the day but his comment was...NEVER EVER again.
I know that is not very helpful but that's what I know.
Just my $0,02

Removing the needles (2 spoons) is easy but getting them oriented accurately after applying the decal is the challenge for the DIYer.

I have not taken apart the guages, but I can tell you to remove the cluster takes less than 5minutes with a premade coathanger device to pull the cluster out.

Not too difficult...
I did my guage faces about two years ago...

Had them on and off about five times in the last two weeks swapping out speedos...

Getting the needles off is a bit tricky until you get a technique...caution on putting them on as too much pressure can damage the guage.

You should lift the speedo needle over the lower stop post and see where it comes to rest at the bottom of the speedo...mark it at this point as this is where you want to install it...

idk about the w124, but on my w201 the instrument cluster literally pulls straight out! A real no-brainer lol

Unplug all the lights and gauges, and unscrew the cable for the Speedo/Odo. The gauges are held in with little phillips head screws and are easily removed from the rear of the "face plate"

But again this is the w201, hopefully that applies to your car as well

Thanks for that info.
But it seems last night I encountered yet another problem. My odometer stopped at 151k and my left cluster bulb burnt out. Does anyone know the size of those bulbs?

5 min if you took the whole cluster unit off before.

First time took me and hour just to take it out.

sometimes it's easier said than done.

Wow that looks really good

Its not to bad of a job. I have swapped gauges out for a different ones before because of the face of them was deteriorating. Best bet is to take out the cluster and go sit down at a desk or something so you wont lose anything and you can work more carefully
