Widebody Project Started..

Coupe has been disassembled for paint...

Hood extractors are being installed and Euro repeaters will go into the front fenders this week.

Waiting for a set of stock front flares to come in from Joef in Canada.

Sheetmetal mods can't begin until the 3 piece AMG Aero rims arrive from the UK.

Some pix of the progress....

I think you'll be happy with the single-tone paint! This gives you a rough idea with the lower cladding removed.

I couldn't agree more.....even if I'm giving in to Zorro's ongoing suggestions !!!

I will much to the dismay of others do the bumper impact strips in black along with a stock grille painted black.
This was how AMG did the very rare C124 widebody...

I'm doing a very comprehensive thread on www.mbclub.co.uk

Reason is that in the UK the original "1AMG" 1989 320CE still exists along with a very rare NOS AMG C124 widebody sheetmetal kit.

Been getting some great photos from UK forum members to try to get the repro as correct as possible

Thanks Joe

Getting excited now...ordered tires..... Kumho Ecsta XS street/track soft compound.
255/40R17 front and 295/35R17 rear...
Should be in and mounted by the end of next week.

Found a local company that my bodywork guy knows the owner...
Name is Sound-FX, which I thought just did banging audio/visual stuff...
Find out they have a large garage in the back that does wheels and tires.
They were mounting some 22's on an Denali ( grotesque? ) so they have the machine that can easily do 10" wide 17's.
They were only $10.00 more total on the tires compared to Tire Rack and only charging $20.00 per wheel for mounting and balancing.

Pix will start coming in another week or two as the body mods start...
Your front arches will be a great part of the build !!

Ed

P.S.

Anything on the V4?

very nice. I noticed the vents on your hood. How did those come about? They look like a good project to hit up for me.

They are 80's era Nissan 280ZX items.
Very similar to what Mosselmann used on his 320 Silver Arrow twin turbo project car in the early nineties.

They are located on the hood to act as heat extractors.
The turbos tend to build up a heat soak at low speed and after shutdown.

Extractors will allow the heat to flow out of the engine compartment and prevent breakdown of electrical components.

Has nothing to do with engine cooling or air intake...engine runs around 95C max on the hottest day.
Aux fans set to kick on at 92C

RBYCC, when used to run a lot bigger tires on the rear, my ABS light would come on while on the freeway. Just something you may need to think about.

Tire overall diameter is the same that I've run for many, many years.
Just wider, not taller.

You may have a problem with the ABS indicator when you change the overall diameter of the tire.

Ah gotcha. Thanks for that info I will keep it in mind.
Yeh I had 255/45/18 and 225/35/18.

Yeh I had 255/45/18 and 225/35/18.
First concern about going to a +1 or +2 wheel/tire package is to always maintain the same tire overall diameter regardless of rim size.

For example, the stock tires on my 1988 300CE are 195/65-15 with an overall diameter of 25"

Over the years I went from 15" to 17" to 18" and now back to 17"
Still maintaining the 25" tire overall diameter.
Even the 295/35-17 I just purchased are 25" OD.

Your 255/45-18 are about 27" OD and the 225/35-18 about 24.2" OD

The larger OD deviation from stock can and will cause interference with the wheel arches.

The mismatch of diameters front to rear will mess with the output signal from the ABS wheel sensor.
It is seeing one wheel turning faster then the other wheel and is being fooled to think there is slippage and applying the brakes.
Not a good situation.

Always match stock OD

You know that we are waiting for them.

Looking good so far and I have to say like everyone above. The wheels are great.
