Got a 260E with a 5 speed...looking for advice

I just got this Benz today and looking to go through it.
The car has a problems starting up sometimes...especially when hot.
I am an Audi guy and do my own work...so before i go chasing my own tail with this benz i am looking for a few ideas of what could cause this intermittent problem.I will start with a new distributor cap tomorrow and see if that goes away.Any help is more than welcome.
Also the car has 211k..and had a head rebuilt a few years ago...are the Mercedes engine interchangeable from Automatic to 5 speed..as in.. can i convert a 3.0 engine that is from an auto to a 5 speed using my parts from the 2.6 engine?
Also how much power can i squeeze out of the stock engine without destroying the engine or the tranny...looks like a turbo has more than enough room in there.
and last..on my audis i use my laptop and a vag-com cable for at home diagnoses..is anything similar(must be) available for the old benzos?

Thanks

hot starts could be your fuel accumulator.

E
x2 on accumulator if its having hot start problems.

But start with the basics especially at 211k miles. Fuel filter, spark plugs. Test resistance on ignition wires.
As for diagnostics, depends on year and state. What is yours?

I honestly wouldn't be wanting to turbo at 211k miles...For these cars, the turbos are hard to find and very expensive. It is honestly not worth it.

Yep, the 3.0 is a year for year, direct bolt-in swap.

really? I feel like I'm running in complete circles here, thread to thread, explaining the need for a SINGLE MASS FLYWHEEL for 5 speed swaps from anything other than a 2.3 16v. Please correct me if I am wrong.

No such data logging diagnostics exist on these cars. There is a diagnostic socket for very primitive tests but nothing close to a laptop link. You could go the Megasquirt II route fairly cheaply if your looking for tuning ability.

Yeah...I think Megasquirt is the answer.
So ..I have this 260 5 speed..if i find a low mileage 3.0 will the 260 flywheel bolt to the 3.0 crank?

A 2.3-16 flywheel won't work on a M103 engine without modification...yes, it will bolt up to the crank but you need to add markers for the CPS. See this thread: http://community.190revolution.net/p...m103-swap.html

The '86 and '88 300E was available with a 5-speed manual, you want the flywheel from one of those...no mod, bolt-in but very, very rare.

Yes. In fact, I will be doing a similar swap soon too. I'm putting a 3.0 into a 190E 2.6 5-speed.

I see what you were referring to now, the M103 5 speed components should be a direct fit. However, if you go that route note that there are even less 3.0 5 speeds around than the 2.3 16v's, in the states at least.

I would find out what parts you could source from the dealer easier as to avoid headaches down the road when things start to wear.

I have a MSII ecu sitting in my room right now that has been waiting a year for me to start funding my W124 EDIS EFI project. Keep us posted on your progress.
