Loud ticking noise when engine is hot, NOW when cold too!!!

Hi,

I posted the same thread to other forum, but it seems no one knows what cause the symptom.
I hope I can get help here.

I have this loud ticking noise after 30~40 min driving.
No noise what so ever in cold start.

I can't hear it if all the windows are closed, but I hear pretty loud ticking noise when windows are opened. First I thought the ticking noise is coming from passengerside, then I opened the hood to pin point the noise, it's more like coming from driver side, back of the engine.

I think it's from inside of the engine or maybe injector that close to cylinder #6....The noise is like tick tick tick tick.....and gets quiet for a few sec, and goes tick tick tick.....goes quiet....over and over....

What can this be???

Thanks.

Stuck lifter?

I have a ticking at the back of my wagon, but its not that loud and you can only hear it if I put my head at the back of the bay.

How old is your oil and when were your spark plugs changed? check the gap. get some engine restorer from walmart with good oil (Amsoil) 92 octane chevron and a bottle of chevrons inj cleaner put it in and drive the pi$$ outa it. My 300e went away.

The engine oil is 400 miles old. The spark plugs are a month old. The gap is correct. I put 2 bottles of injector cleaners last 1 month with 91 octane. I can't get 92 where I live.
What I haven't done is driving it hard. I will try to do that.

Thanks.

The noise is there when cold start now, which means it got worse than before. Here is a video that I took just now.

Sounds like a diesel....Not too good. I'm not sure from here so I won't throw out random ideas. Somebody else should be able to identify that.

Why would your oil be overfilled?

The PO changed the engine oil and since it's leaking around timing chain area, he overfilled it?

The level at the dipstick will tell you that. If its leaking at the TC area the front timing cover seal needs replacing.

oh boy that sounds rough. Do not drive it hard. Sounds like a timing chain slapping. Also check your belt tensioner.

It's not timing chain. I can't hear any noise around that area.
The belt tensioner is fine too. I put a new tensioner shock absorber 100 miles ago, and that time all the pullys were checked.

Anyway, this car keeps breaking and I am tired of it. I don't want to spend anymore money into it.
If I sell it, how much can I get? Damn...this sucks.

Might be worth $2000 if the interior is in okay condition.
Do you have oil pressure?

Do you mean whether the car gets correct oil pressure?
Everything works fine except the problems that I have.
interior is in perfect condition and all the electric stuff works fine. AC blows cold etc.
Yeah, I guess I will sell it as a part car. $2000....wow it sucks...I paid and spent a lot more than that....

Holly crap that sound like 2 lifters. I was thinking a little one dont drive it hard to at all. What happens when you rev it up. Thats a valve tap usually you valve seals are either shot or the valve isnt seating properly.
One:
Super thin crapy oil can make the valve not seat correctly. What weight did the guy use 5w20 were did you go? Try a heavier like 15w40 or 20w50. Go to walmart since ur on abudget and try mobil delvac super 1300 15w40 Its a diesel oil that is good for cars also. I ran that for 5 years tillI switched to amsoil.
Two:
One of your hydrolic lifters could be bad. Its not self adjusting Properly. Go to the junk yard and pic a couple up and play the old switch a rue game (might cheaply fix it)
Three:
Take the head off and take it to the machine shop and get the valves and seals done.
Also bad injector could cause that also.

When did the tapping start?

Mine is ticking ever since I put thinner oil in, try a thicker oil first before assuming its a bigger problem. I hope is nothing major, a stuck lifter would be incredibly uncommon?

Agreed try using some 20-50 first and see what happens. No need to change the filter. Just dump and refill.
You're in California....so 20-50 won't be a problem it doesn't get cold enough.

Thanks for the reply.
As you guys suggested, I will change oil with 20-50....how much oil do I need? 6 quarts?

It wasn't ticking at all before, then I heard ticking noise after I drove 30min...
Now it start ticking as soon as I start the engine.
The vidoe I posted is when I started the engine first time.

Is it ok to drive my car?

Ok, guys.
I just changed the engine oil with 15w40 disel engine oil. The noise is gone, but I have to wait till the engine completely cool down and start it again. If it makes the noise again, then it's the lifter right?
Before I changed the oil I rev up the engine 3000 rpm, and the tapping noise gets faster when rpm goes up.
I hope I don't get the noise again when cold start.

I also noticed that the drain plug has no washer, I guess someone forgot to put it back. Is should be fine, right?

Just be careful and don't tighten it too much to damage the pan. Tight's tight.
