If its a 91, you have the early 3.0 liter M104 which is a 24 valve motor. Still the mechanical injection, but a 7000rpm redline vs the M103 and later M104 which had a 6400rpm redline.

2001 lexus gs 300, 1996 Gmc Yukon SLT, 1991 merc 300ce, MOTO bmw 1970 r50/5, 1990 audi 100,
Thanks for the reply, like I stated Im new to the benz world, came over from the bmw e 36 side, I got this 91 300ce out of this guys driveway for 450 dollars. He stated 2 owners( true, I car faxed it) and it needs a air smog pump, it was seized , belt snapped and he parked it in april. Hes got reciepts on rebuilt tranny in 2004, car liiks in decent shape, has 170k miles, interior is in great shape, those pumps seem expensive . I found one used for 160.00 . Should I buy a reman one or new or go with the used? Sorry for some of my questions, I have just been thinking should I get into this 300ce or is it gonna cost me many dollars and headache. Im not a mechanic but can change little things . Do you think I could change that air pump and put the belt on myself or do I have to take it to a pro??? Also what else should I look at with this 300? Is the 104 engine better then the 103. Is on more durable in the long run? Any thought would help. I got the car to start, it runs ok...didnt want to run it too long....Is it wort the money? Also, am I posting my questions in the right area, computers are also new to me.....like the benz, thanks Neanderthal for the reply!

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
Get

rebuild.About 300 with ne valves.
But first why not have it inspected by a mechanic that knows his way around a 3liter M104 before sinking that money into it.

That is a very nice engine. Assuming it's been maintained properly. Changing the smog pump is the pretty much the easiest accessory to change. First..! You gotta undo the big 19mm bolt on the belt tensioner which is just to the right of the crankshaft pulley. Then you can loosen the 12/13mm belt adjusting rod on top of the belt tensioning assembly. There is a plastic guide with "arrow" on the tensioner which will tell you when the belt is not tensioned at all (even though the belt snapped, the tensioner must be undone). Two 13mm bolts hold the smog pump in, the top one is pretty long. After you've got the new pump mounted...then route the new belt properly. You can then tension the belt by turning the adjusting rod in the oppposite direction of before until the belt is tensioned. Then you finally can torque the big 19mm. It's an easy job!
