New member, and tranny swap question.
As of last week I officially inherited my grandmother's 1992 E320 24V. I love the car, I have a good mechanical and tuning background, and I would appreciate technical answers.
My plan is to swap the auto tranny into a manual, and I've been doing lots of research this week, and I've come to the following conclusion. Please correct my info if it's wrong, and point me in the right direction.
I have found a 5 speed 300E transmission which bolts directly onto the M104 (3.2L 24v), and sources say I can use the E190's pedal box and driveshaft as well. Is this correct?
Also, is the ECU the same on both units, or will I have some electronic adventures there?
I think the car is equipped with a VLSD, as well.
Checked into factory engine swaps and came out with one reasonable candidate: swapping in the C36 engine. While costly, this is the cleanest swap I could find.
Any info would be greatly appreciated, guys and girls.
Cheers, Shoomakan.
The 300E manual you just found will bolt straight up to your 92. You will need to find an early single mass flywheel from an 86-88 300E or 86-89 190E 2.6. Part number for that flywheel is: 103 032 0205.
If you have a 92 12valve M103, the computer already has fuel mapping and all that for a manual transmission. You don't need any wiring harnesses. All manual transmission parts off a 190E will bolt straight up to a 300E with little modification. You may need to have a custom driveshaft made for your 300E or if you can find a 300E manual driveshaft, you can use that.
The 300E does not have LSD.
If you have a 190E with a 5 speed parts car (like I do) it's simply taking everything off down to the pilot bearing and putting it in your 300E. The only problem you will have is finding a single mass flywheel that will work with this set up.
If you have the later HFM system, you will need to do a small modification to the flywheel in order for your car to start. If you have any more questions, ask. I'll be doing this swap to my 300CE most likely in December when I have time and I'll be documenting the swap.
Thanks for the catch. The manual transmission and flywheel stuff all still applies either no matter what M104 engine he has.
I have a 3.0 litre 24 Valve. That makes it the M104, if I'm not mistaken. So everything still applies, I guess.
I'm buying the 5 speed tranny (300E) in a couple of weeks and will start gathering the parts. Should be done within a month or 2.

The only flywheel that fits from the 190E series is the one from the 190E 2.6 single mass, not the AMG versions. And you need to remember the flywheel sensor.
Also, you need to change the lower automatic crossmember to the manual one, or modify the one you have.
You can use the gear level and pedal box from the 190 as well, as well as alter the shift linkages. And you'll have to either modify your driveshaft or purchase one that was made for the manual in the first place.
