sunroof troubles
1) Metal clip inside the sunroof is broken
2) Steel cable has snapped
3) Electric motor gears have sheered
4) All of the above! (more likely if you keep pressing the button!)
Take the sunroof trim off inside the car. You'll be able to see the clip attached to the cable. Remove the trim from the boot (trunk) on the electric aerial side. This is where the motor is. From here you can remove the cable and the motor.

I've had the roof stop working on my last two MB's (a 1986 300SE and now a 1990 300E)...
I was quoted $1300+ to fix the roof on the SE, and the car was written off before I had the work done.
Now I just picked up a low-mileage 300E, and the roof stops working after 3 weeks!
They've replaced the cable already but are telling me that the metal tube the cable sits in is split, and must be replaced - about 15 hours work!!
