New Engine Noise

I have a new problem ... my 89 300E has been running much better since i found this forum. I am really trying to bring it back to original but sometimes it feels like a loosing battle.

To the problem, yesterday I drove down to San Diego and back (about 200 miles round trip) and after i got back i noticed a distinct new clatter in my engine. It seems to be coming from the cap and rotor, but its hard to really tell. Is there a cronic issue with the cap or rotor? Are they comon to break? It sounds slighty like there is a loose piece of plastic rattling around. There also seems to be a slight whine from what I think is a pulley berring. Are all the front pullies reapirable?

All the help is appreciated in advance. I am hoping for pointers before I rip the whole top end of the motor apart.

Thanks

There is a orange plastic...I don't even know what to call it. Its plastic and it breaks. My bet is that it has broken and the rotor is hitting it. I suggest you remove the cover and check it out. If either the rotor + cap look worn replace them both. If you have no history of them being replaced in the last...60k miles let's say...replace them. They can cause lots of bad running issues and are a general tune up item.

Here is a picture of what I mean....I found this when I replaced my rotor. I believe it protects the rotor from moisture...You don't have to run with one, but FYI they are expensive ($40-$50 IIRC)...pretty ridiculous for a piece of plastic.
