FINALLY finished up today.

Started up after 2 months within 1 second. Beautiful Ran great. Shifts great. Very happy. No leaks, no issues so far.

And I spoiled her with a new hood pad too


Damn she is dirty and dusty...Time to give her a wash!

That's great to hear. I'm thinking about grabbing a junkyard tranny and rebuilding as a spare. Not sure if I can do it in my garage ...

All in all it was actually really simple up to the B3 bands. The trickiest part was just the fact I broke the pump gear and took 3 tries before I realized how to properly put on the pump inner seal. Other than that it was dead easy and straightforward with the FSM by my side.

Glad it is over though...

Tomorrow I am starting putting the 4 pot calipers, tie rods and Eibach springs on my 260E. I can't wait Thing is gonna have godly stopping power

For us transmission-illiterate folks... which particular shift is affected by the B3 bands? I've only done external tranny work, not internal.

Also, it's a common mistake to break the pump tangs during installation... you need to be *extremely* careful to make sure the converter is fully seated by hand. The transmission must slide up against the engine block by hand, without using the bolts to pull it forward. Then the converter will slide forward against the flywheel/flexplate.

The B3 band only affects reverse and I have "heard" 1st gear although I am not sure. Said and done, it wasn't bad at all. The most difficult part of reassembly was the pump gear unit with making sure the seals were good. You'll need a second pair of hands to compress the pump housing springs while removing the tension (clip)? I have a pic of it earlier.

I used a ton of extensions so I was wrenching back at the driveshaft. I found it was the only way to do it. Lifting the engine at the front to tilt it back helped as well. FYI.

Autohaus sells a complete rebuild kit I believe. It may be only seals + gaskets though.

awesome, i finally got the trans out yesterday after i finally set on rebuilding it and the top bolt on the passenger side a removed with a wrecheting wrench because there was a bracket there not allowing my socket thru therefor had to remove my exhaust as well, but fingers crossed.

If you removed the exhaust, take the opportunity to look at both the precats. If in doubt, cut them off yourself, hollow them out then take it to a local place to weld it back on (mark the positions of course).

They will over time plug up as these engines do burn.

I hollowed both mine out and have just a single Magnaflow cat downstream and I passed the CA smog fine first try

Inspiration has turned into action, my tranny is now sitting on my shop floor. Think I'll take a day to contemplate what to do next.....

Transmission has 240K miles, shifts perfectly, no leaks. Fluid and filter changed every 30K miles since new, only problem is no (or very weak) reverse. I understand this is caused by the failure of the B3 clutch pack piston. Can someone confirm this?

Maybe the experts can give me some guidance on what to replace. Obviously the B3 piston needs new seals, but what else?

I'll post some pictures when I get things cleaned up.

You'll see in my pictures the worn band (the first one)...since your reverse is completely or is difficult to engage, you'll find all of your bands will look like my first, or worse.

These transmissions DO last a long time, but maintenance and fluid changes on time are an absolute must. Unfortunately the B3 bands will fail regardless. Just the way it is.

I figured it out. This is what happens when people link to externally hosted photos, and then change domains, or switch to a different photo service, or let their account expire, etc. It's best to upload photos to the forum directly so this doesn't happen.

Anyway - the original photo links were all at the old "ps2cho.net" domain, which is DOA. Thanks to stupid forum rules that don't allow editing old posts, Robert can't even go back and fix the links in post #1. Fortunately the photos are in the same path at the new domain, w124-zone.com. Example:
