87 300 E SUBFRAME mount bushings.

Just ordered rear control arms complete and subframe mount bushings for my car. My queston is have any of you guys changed the rear subframe mount bushings before. How hard is it to get the new ones in. (any special tools or techniques involved.)
Thanks.

almost 200 views and nobody has changed their subframe bushings?
My car only has 50k on it and never spent a night outside and the bushings are horrible!
Somebody has to of changed them.
Just curious if they are a pain to get the new ones in, or if any special tools are needed?
thanks,
Dustin.

I was watching this thread and hoping someone much more knowledgeable than I would post some cherished, hard learned tidbits of information about this, but yes, you should do some Google searches on "W124 subframe bushings" and various threads will come up - I did and it still looks like a formidable task. There are special tools required - one to press the subframe bushings in/out, one to press the diff bushings in/out (these may actually be the same tool), and one to press the lower control arm bushing in/out. There seem to be several DIY tools/techniques for the subframe bushings as well as some tool sites (and ebay) that sell the tool. I would also do what you did and just order the complete lower control arm as this tool seems to be expensive and hard to find.

Good luck,

- FD

If it's anything like the rear subframe on my E30 was, it's a huge pain in the butt. Unless you have the proper tool of course.

If you do it maybe you can write a DIY article?

I have no idea how they are done

Enquiring minds want to know . . .

FYI, I found the MB procedure for subframe and diff bushing R&R here:

and here:

Definitely a pita if you're not equipped.

I've done it. Buy or borrow a bushing press. With the right tool, it's really not a bad job. Without the tool, a royal PITA. I didn't see any on eBay just now but they do come up fairly often.
