Usually, it involves removing the headliner. Since the cable mechanism is intact, the problem sounds like the tracks and guides are loose or broken, or not lubed.
Sorry I can't tell you more. Good luck!

My sunroof is the same way, I can crack it up but when i try to put it back it won't go. The motor will try to move it back then just turn off when it realizes its not going anywhere.
Ive had the shop i always take it to check it out and they said it does invlove the removal of the headlines, which is apparently really hard to put back up. The shop won't fix it because of how hard it is I guess.

Eventually I will get mine fixed if i ever find a shop in the area that will fix it.

It's not very hard, actually, and the headliner does not need to be removed. Google "diy w124 sunroof repair" and click the result on the website "okiebenz". I would link you, but I am using my phone.

He also states in the end of his article to avoid cable replacement if you can. I'm assuming the problem Qmorris and I have is a cable, which in okiebenz's words is hard to replace.

With his problem he couldn't even crack his sunroof up, qmorris and I can both crack ours up just won't slide back. My shop told me it was most likely the cables, but they did not know if they were broken, jammed or what.

So if qmorris has the same problem i do (which it sounds like he does) it should be a cable problem, which okiebenz recommends to avoid if you can. In my case, removal and replacing of the headliner would probably be good as it is already sagging in the back, and the liner on the door panel near the passenger seat is working its way off, so i can actually see the metal.

EDIT:
This doesn't really matter, just thought id throw this in there incase you try to do a DIY.
The shop that told me it was hard to fix and they wouldnt do it has been working on my car ever since it was in my family. They always immediately know whats wrong and how to fix it, and fix it well. Basically my point is, for this shop to be saying its hard, it must really mean its hard.
Just a heads up before you attempt to DIY.

Right, the headliner doesn´t need removal. The rails are most likely broken, one or both.
It´s not too hard to replace, but you might want to seek specific guidance if you are not familiar. Requires a bit of time and patience sometimes..
-Cheers.

I did it in a few hours using that walkthrough. mine also would pop up and down, but not retract. The lifter arms were broken, and jamming when I attempted to retract it. The cable was fine.
