refinishing/renewal 124 console wood
Andy at Heritage Woodworks quoted me $130 including return shipping to completely strip and restore 124 console wood. He said they would strip to bare wood if the o.e. lacquer was cracked or faded. P.

Very easy....remove the console (I have a coupe so a couple of screws in the inside-front of it) then remove the one screw holding the wood down (underneath the console). It will slide out - be careful, a couple of clips under the ashtray. The window and mirror controls are pinned into the bottom, again be careful. The ashtray comes next, again, it is just some screws inside of it.
Shipping, I just sent mine in a box with bubble-wrap and newspaper. Very easy process.
Good luck.

Removing the console wood
According to the Mercedes body & chassis book the removal is easy: for 86-93 124, lift edge of carpet on shift console exposing screw at the edge of the wood. Remove screw and carefully raise wood. The front edge of the wood slides under the underside of the ashtray. The rubber framed, plastic shift gate pops out of the wood, but the shifter arm is held by a nut which can be reached with the wood elevated. P.

Here's a website that shows pics of how to remove the console.

If I remeber correctly, it was just under 2 weeks or so. Trust me, I know - it was ugly to look at every morning w/o the wood, but well worth it when it was done. One thing to ask them is when they think they will do another batch of refurbish/refinishing of consoles, because they told me they did them in batches.

Removing the head unit
I have seen many discussions about removing the antiquated Grand Prix tape/radio from a 124 (86-93) where it is suggested that hooked coathanger is required to remove the face from the radio! When I removed my head unit I followed Mercedes' directions: remove ashtray revealing two tabs at the bottom edge of the radio. Depress both tabs and pull radio forward. Mercedes Dealers confirm that it is not necessary to remove the face of the radio to remove it. The important thing is to remember not to use the speaker wires coming off the dirt-collecting, mechanical fader switch when putting in a new head unit. All aftermarket CD head units have built-in electronic faders.
