All gauge needles at zero + ABS ASR on

1992 400E, 229K miles. While engine is running all my instrument gauge needles sit at zero and ABS and ASR lights are both on. Also, there is a buzzing that sounds like the door buzzer but very muted. Cruise also doesn't work, which was working before.

Happened after I came out from the store and started the car.

Neither of the two engine harnesses have been replaced but there is no exposed wiring either.

I'm guessing its a problem with ground.

Car runs just fine. But I might be doing 100+ mph, on fumes, at 8000 rpms, and boiling over and ready to explode...and without the "idiot lights" who would ever know?!

Any suggestions?

It's a blown fuse or a fuse with a corroded connection. I had exactly the same thing happen when I was doing some work on the car and accidentally shorted a wire. I think it was fuse 9, but I don't remember for sure; it's easy enough to check them all.

They get corroded or get cracks you can't detect unless you take them out. Wiggle them around or replace them with the new style not lead fuses.

The faint buzzing sound you here is indeed the warning buzzer being back fed by the circuits that still have power. What other things stopped working when this happened? Do the dome and trunk lights still work? If you have the factory radio, does this still work? If they don't and they used to, the problem is in fuse 9 or its associated wiring. Since you have a V-8, does the speedo still work? I believe they are electronic on the V-8s.

The most likely culprits are the 9, 5, and 3 fuses, in that order, or their associated wiring/connectors. You may also want to check the red blade style fuse on the OVP relay behind the battery. I have also read about some connector failure issues in the wiring behind the instrument panel affecting the cruise control. A bad connector to the instrument panel could also cause what you describe.

Please post if you find the problem.

Battery in the trunk on the V8s. And IIRC, we don't have the same OVP setup either. Speedo is electronic so there are no cables attached to the cluster, just wiring. Fuses are easy and cheap to check and replace, cluster is easy to pull to check wiring interface. Likely one of those two, IMHO.

Yup. It is resolved while replacing fuses #5 was melted but not separated so it looked good but wasn't. Embarrassing. Grateful to all and having to the eat humble pie. Maybe I
was eager for new harnesses or whatever . Its nearly Christmas after all. Thanks everyone for your help. I
