I finally decided to post on this wonderful machine. It is killing me, though. Since last year, I have been having the darndest time with the cold start, rough idling issue. I have new fuel pumps, fuel filter, ovp and spark plugs. Just today I had a new distributor cap and rotor put in. Still rides rough, ready to cut off issue. The mechanic told me I may need to change the ignition, spark plug wires. Geez, IDK. I haven't even addressed the tranny fluid and tranny/engine mounts yet. I just want this fine machine to run smooth. I had cam cover and seals done. It still goes through some oil. The oil light comes on after 4k miles. According to the manual, I suppose to get to 7.5 k before I need an oil change. I just put a couple quarts in to get to that 7k point before I change the filter again. I love this car but it is frustrating the hell out of me. In terms of the cold start, cutting off issue. I am hoping I am going in the right direction. What's next if the wires don't help? Cold start valve? Help!!

Ahhhh for the luv of a Benz.
Couple things worth considering.
I. The new OVP - official one of cheap aftermarket ?
I did the cheap route and car ran worse than before.
What I did do though is clean all the pins on the old OVP as they had a buildup on them and blew out the receptacles in the wiring.

2. Have you changed all fuses in the fuse box to the "copper" type ?
The silverish fuses can look intact but may have in fact broken and be barely sending current through.

3. Have you checked the replacement fuel filter for gunk ?
Often when fuel filters are replaced they are masking the fact that the tank has a buildup inside and as quick as you put the new one in it too fills with gunk.

4. Have you run an injector cleaner through it for a few tanks ?

5. Cold start - if you haven't already when you get in try this. Turn the key to just prior to start. Wait a count of 7 then start. I have this issue with my 300CE BUT using the above she kicks straight over. This could well indicate a faulty fuel accumulator BUT at this stage whilst it isn;t anything worse than waiting a few seconds I am happy to leave it as is.

6. If you search oil threads I think you will find consumption around 600 miles per quart is quite normal for a wearing engine. You might try switchingto a less dense oil to be nice to the engine (.eg from 15W to 10W means the engine doesn't work as hard at startup to get the oil to operating temperature)

Good Luck

I will address these points since I tried no. 5 this morning. No dice with the 7 sec count. Still wouldn't turn over immediately. Always takes me a few turns before it finally turns over. Driving it I can't accelerate too fast from a full stop or it will cut off. I did run fuel injector cleaner once about 2k miles ago. Will try to run it again a few more times soon. In terms of the oil, I was going to use Mobil 1 0w40 on my next oil change. See what happens.

My indy ran a fuel test when he put in my OVP and he determined my fuel system was ok. He installed new spark plugs as well. Maybe I'll check the pins connectors on the OVP when I get home from work. Work in progress.

I checked the pin connectors on the OVP and they were fine. The OVP is Kaehler OE so I don't think that is the problem. I did the 7 sec count again a few more times and it seems to help it start. Sometimes it starts right away. May keep doing this technique until I figure out the culprit. Haven't installed the spark plug/ignition wires yet. Still going thru my progressions with this fine machine.

Still haven't got the ignition/spark plug wires yet. I have been running Techron for about 3 tankfuls. I gotta tell you, it seems to be running better. Not top notch but better. Sometimes rough starting, sometimes not. The fuel accumulator may still be the culprit but the Techron has been making me breathe easier on the highway

Update

Well I have been letting my wife drive it to get her comments. It starts right away after feeding the tank Techron. It still is rough accelerating. Have to push the foot down hard to climb a hill. Would that be fuel delivery problems? Any other culprits?

Un freakin' believable. My car was doing so well until 2 months ago my whole climate system stopped working. No air blowing(it was cool at best during the summer). Nothing works except rear defog. No air blowing!!. I tried running front defog and I started smelling smoke or something. I immediately turned it off. Could this be my fuse going bad? Going to the shop for a tail light and tranny flush soon. Should I have him look at my fuses? Help!!!

Unhappy It's always something

This past Friday, my car just stopped on the interstate. I suspected the alternator but was hoping. Well, I had it towed to the dealer and they confirmed. Now today the are saying I need a battery as well. $1020 for alternator installed Adding $300 for the battery Damn stealerships, I hate them

Damn sure you have to get a dealer involved ?

Could save yourself a heap in labor and sourcing parts yourself !

Didn't want to get them involved but I needed a loaner. The part would have taken a bit to arrive. In other words, the convenience. Didn't need a battery like the SA said. Had to argue with him on that. He cut 125 bucks off and I had a 25 buck coupon so I made out at $870. Not bad for a stealer Yes, I know I could have cut that to at least 550 if I source the part on my own. I was stuck on the road and would of had to tow it far away to my indy. Well got the car back and all's well except for my wallet

I have a bit of a "agreement" with my mechanic. The things I can and have time to do I work on. The stuff I do not want to do for various reasons I let them do. Usually I do the labor intensive troubleshooting and creative things like the diff swap. Routine things like oil changes, AC service and such I leave to them. Works well, I can drive a nice car and he still makes his boat payments.

Curious

I just had my engine and tranny mounts installed on my baby. Wow!! What a difference. It even starts pretty well. Rides like a new car. Does this work help my cold starting woes? Or am I imagining things?

Good to see it's coming along "KLUV".

Any updates on your cold start issues ? Cannot see the transmission mounts effecting cold start

Didn't think so. Just was wondering So far, so good about the cold start. It seems to be running like a well oiled machine right now. Hasn't left me on the road for a while now I replaced plenty of parts and going to get the fuel accumulator, O2 sensor done next month. Still leaks oil like a sieve. Every 3k miles or so, I have to add oil. Others said it might be oil sending unit. Oh well I can live with it for now. What you think of those rims? Paint is peeling off of a couple of them but they will do for this summer. What's the ballpark figure for me to refinish/repaint these rims?

From what I can tell it's generally about the 400-500 mark to have rims done properly depending on what they need to do - it may be cheaper.
I am having same issue (see Poppa's got some new wheels thread) with the Zender wheels I bought. I am actually going to put tread on for awhile until I can have them done properly and not care so much about cost. Yours don't look to bad - so why not give em a shot for awhile and enjoy your purchase. Besides if your like me you still have a nother set to put back on later !

Took your advice and just put the rubber on them. Not bad and the peeling paint isn't that noticeable.

Storm,
Where can I get the copper top fuses? The cold start is very tricky thing for me. When first crank in the morning(or if it sits for a while) it doesn't turn over but immediate second crank it turns over fine. What is the deal with that?

Definitely do the copper ceramics. I had the aluminum ceramics before and I had tons of intermittent electrical gremlins.
