Hi everyone congratulations on the great site and this is my first post.
I've recently acquired a 230te (124), the radio isn't working and with that I dont know how good the factory speakers are.
Thus I'm tossing up weather or not to replace speakers as well as head unit...
Question is how's the sound quality, loudness, etc in the factory speakers, are they worth replacing?, if so anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks.

Good is a very subjective measure of anything.
What are your standards?
The 124 radio is not the best. It was OK in its day (notice I didn't say good.) It is mostly good for listening to music that isn't too heavy on low notes (rap, hip hop, reggea, rock) or high notes (metal, classical (although it's pretty good at classical)
So essentially your favourite style of music will determine whether or not its good enough for you.
As for. Get your stereo system checked out before you decide to replace parts. Upgrading from the stock front speakers to some low end Blaupunkt 2 way speakers greatly improved the soundstage and brought out the highs a lot better. I prefer to listen to hip hop, r&b, reggea, jazz, pop. So no real difference except to the jazz and pop. Which sounded just fine on the original system even at full volume. It just left me wanting more.
Changing out my door speakers for 6 inch woofers from a component set did very little for my low end; improved it some, but the location of the speakers in the rearwards portion of the door means most of the sound is directed at the seat.
My current car is still stock. I think I am going to limit my changes to two way front speakers, door speakers, and a low profile powered sub either under the seat or in the fist aid kit. I no longer need to hear loud music. Clarity is far more important now than volume.
The joys of getting older. And by that I mean wiser.

Cheers
Yeah good points, I'm not too fussed about bass and super high volumes, but I do like to maintain the quality at a moderate volume, may try to get the old becker going and see for myself.
thanks alot

MBWorld Fanatic!
I found that the stock speakers on my 300ce were perfectly fine, balanced, and clear with the updated BE4602.
I updated to Rockford Fosgates and like them a lot, though, like all component speakers, can get muffled with high bass + high volume, as I lack a dedicated sub and channel.

Since the thread is up, on my '87 300E driver side speaker up in the dash has a slight "rattle" when it hits certain notes, hinting to me it is blown. How would I go about getting that grill off to replace it? Looks like a pain in the rear to me, but who knows. Let me know!
Thanks,
Jake

I have an extra set of (band new in box) w124 speakers specifically designed for the car. I have a '95 w124 w/the original radio and the sound is pretty darn good in my opinion. If you have an interest I'll look into these further from a sale price standpoint. Greg
