Yes, I fixed this problem in my 380SE by resoldering the connections on the fuel pump relay circuit board. On that car it was located in the fuse box next to the brake booster.

Resoldering the PCB in the relay is tedious and of course you run the risk of smoking something on the board which means no-go for that relay. It looks like the unit for the 300E is a plastic housing, which will make it hard to repair and put back together. The one I had from the 380SE was a metal housing. I found that there was one big (about 8mm) solder connection in the middle of the board that was obviously bad, so I resoldered it and it lasted another 3 years until I sold the car.
For the 1988 300E, there is a chassis break at 396765 (last six digits of your VIN), so make sure you get the correct unit. The relay goes for about $100 online.

Relay
...sounds like the OVP relay. Behind the battery. The is a TSB on this from MB. Check the maker and part number then buy a new one (or open the old one and resolder the bad joint, inside) but why bother... You may want to open it and look for the "cold" solder joint before you spend $70 (I think).

I agree. I had exactly the same symtoms and have now had a fortnights trouble-free running since changing the OVP relay. This was £45 from MB dealer who said this part has been modified and has a new part number - aparantly, it is common to have cutting-out faults, if the OVP relay has never been changed.
Good luck,
Doug

Well I changeed thhe fuel system relay. but just before I brought the car in for my scheduled appointment my water pump went out! So Ihad that fixed too including the belts. While Iwas there, I had the rear suspension fixed by putting in new bushings and the bar that went there as well. I also had the car tuned up. spark plugs and filter etc. and the oil changed. I paid 517.00!

OLD P/N: 000 540 52 45 (manufactured by Siemens)
NEW P/N: 000 540 67 45
I recently replaced the OVP on my 93 300CE -- with the updated one. Makes starting MUCH more predictable.
