Radiator overflow hose: any ideas??

Any ideas? Is it really just a push fit? And do these elbow bits come loose occasionally?

Yes, it really is just a push/snap fit. I don't believe that it should release pressure and coolant, though, when you exert sideways force on it. Perhaps the "O" ring is defective. The part, along with a new "O" ring, is available from your friendly dealer - just a couple of dollars here in the US. Apparantly, it does break off, causing loss of collant and all the other things that can occur with coolant loss. It is curious that this part is made this way.
You may not need a new radiator....the problem you describe is similar to my E280.
I had an air lock in my system after the garage changed the coolant and it caused the car to overheat, which lead to the elbow that goes into the radiator blowing off and blowing coolant all over the place.
Luckily no damage was caused.........the elbow was replaced along with a new O ring seal at very little cost.
Try this before you embark on a radiatior replacement.
I notice that you either have a e280 or 320. I also suffered from a persistent coolant leak. All the usual suspects were checked, pump, thermoststat, etc etc. It turned out to be an O ring right at the back of the engine. As you look at the engine it was on right at the back on the right rear. If you shine a torch under the intake manifold, have a look to see if the block is wet. If it is your O ring will have blown.......my garage replaced this for little cost. Since then the car has lost no coolant.
Cheers
