1994 MB E320 Coupe SPortline Edition
Unhappy Blown Head-Gasket ??? 94' E320 Coupe



Got my 94' E320 Coupe, purchase last week, on the lift today at my buddys shop - noticed lots of blown by oil on bottom of transmission (not crazy amount, but enough to notice) - could see heavier deposits up by top end of engine, down on the left side of block.

94' E320 - one owner - dealer maintained - 96k miles ---blown gasket??

Anyone done a head gasket at this mileage? Any other thoughts? We are going to better check it out tomorrow -

Called the party I bought it from - he said, "he'll work with me on it" - to bring it to him mechanic. Anyone know rough price ?

Heard that you need to machine the head if its removed. Is that true? All alluminum? Not too happy about this.

Normal. I had mine done around the same mileage on my '91.

No need to machine head, to my knowledge if just replacing seals.

Huh, interesting. I did speak with my mechanic, who specializes on MB, and general European Car Care.

He said he has done quite a few on 90-95 MB E's. What other maintenance around 100k should I keep an eye out for? This is my 1st benz. Im loving it. Had lots of newer European cars, Audi, VW's etc. And nothing compares to this coupe.

Are you totally sure it is the head gasket.
have you check the oil filter or residues from a former oil spill at the oil filter.?
Worth checking before spending too much.

08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
Most likely head gasket is leaking oil. I had mine done at 99K miles. Local dealet quoted me $1200, I did it myself, spent adout $350, that included new gasket set, new valve stem seals, $150 to a local machine shop for "shaving" the gasket and replacing the valve stem seals. Now, 15K miles later my engine is still absolutely dry.

Ditto to what everybody says above. Make sure it's the head gasket that is leaking.

The head gasket is a known weak point for these engines. The replacement head gasket is an updated design and should last longer. The head goes to the machine shop for reconditioning only if it has seen high miles or warped from overheating. I'd say 96K is high miles.

My headwork

With my 1993 400E - I had both heads machined, valve guides, rails and head gaskets done. I still have some oil loss. I sometimes wonder if the problem is at the bottom of the engine or if something was missed. The engine is completely dry, no leaks from the gaskets at all.
