Rims and tires help.

Hello everyone, well ive decided to get some new rims and say f-uck it to my monoblock pollishing idea, why?> 17's are too small to be my main wheel and ive decieded they would look good black with a chrome lip like someone sugjested earlier, and im gonna sell the tires off them and get new ones and make them my winter rims, So here are my questions.. i know that i need rims that are 17 or 18 x 7.5, will 18x8 fit? with 225/40/18 tires and a 1.75 inch drop. the maine thing is will a set of 18 x8 fit or will it be a problem? please help i need to get these new rims soo cause its starting to get nice around here, thanks everyone, peace out

The only problem that you will encounter is with the outer fenders, with a drop & 18's in is necessary to roll the lips in order not to shred the tires. Also make sure you get the right offset 35 & lower up to about 31. 18X8 in the front & 18X8.5 in the rear. 225/40 18 will be good all around because of the wider lip in the rear it will stretch the rear tire some, just enough to clear the fender. If not you can opt for 215/40 18. At least that's what I will be doing.

Don't buy the fantasy

I think you may be thinking in the wrong direction for the offset. The lower offsets will move the tire away from the suspension and right into the fenders, where most people encounter their rubbing problems.

Although ET35 seems to be one of the most common offsets for the 17” x 7.5” wheels, the OPTIMAL offset may be ET42, because it provides the most space to run the 225 width tires. Many play it safe with 215/45/17 tires on their 17” wheels unless they are lucky to have the higher offset. I played it safe with 205/55/16 tires on my 16” x 7.5” ET 37 AMG wheels. For me, the 225/50/16 is the same diameter, but they would rub on my car if I didn’t install AMG spacers and maybe roll the fender lips. Wider tires would probably fit on the rear, but the front is where the rubbing usually occurs.

Of course there are always exceptions. I read that one guy had ET30 and 235 tires with no rubbing, even though he dropped his car more than 2 inches. He also has no camber issues. It sounds like Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of OZ to me, but that is what he said.

ex 300E driver
With my 300e, I ran 18x8 et 38 wheels. I rode on Kumho 225/40/ZR18 tires. I was not lowered, but I had no rubbing issues with stock height. The 38 offset tucks in a little more than the 35. If you lower the car, I doubt it will rub much, if at all. If it rubs, get the fenders heated up and rolled.

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
I've done a bunch of 124's....

and I still can say that I have yet to be satisfied with any 18" wheel setup on one. I've done cars at stock ride height, and with shorter springs, and they just don't much like the 18" setup. I agree, it looks much better, but that setup just doesn't agree with the 124 like the 17" stuff does. And yes, the fender conflict is a problem. I have found, especially with 18" monoblocks, that the main area of interference is in the 2 and 11 positions of the outer fender, not at the top. And that's not an area you can just "roll" or even cut out. You need to also take into account that the newest 124 out there is 10 years old, and unless you've replaced just about everything in your front end, has 10 ish year old bushings, tie rod ends, and associated parts with more mass hung out on the end. Looks cool, but generally is more of a pain than it's worth. Just my .02......

I agree with sticking to 17 inches

Newbie,

I spoke to one of the dealers here about a year ago. The salesman told me that a few of his customers did roll their fenders, but that it has caused problems, with things like corrosion- a big concern with Canadian winters. ZorroAMG runs 18 inches-you might wanna ask him if he has any problems. I personally don't think it is worth the hassle, but hey, to each his own.
You might want to try lowering your car first, and seeing how you like the look. If you dont like your monoblocks, you can consider another style of wheel in 17 inches. I'd just hate to see you having problem with your car by putting on 18s. If you need info on where to get a lowering kit, PM me.

Enzo, my Benzo
Ok, let me disspell the myths on this thread.

My car, first of all, is dumped on Intrax springs which is th LOWEST drop on a W124. It is on 1 bump front pads and 2 bump rear pads.

I run 18x8 ET35 Carlsson 2/6 B/E's on 215/40/ZR18 Dunlop FM901's (x4)

I have NO rubbing and NO problems. My fenders are NOT rolled.

With the drop I have, 225's rubbed a bit so I said "eff it" and went with 215's. If you aren't dropping it as low and went with ET 38 as previously suggested, you could do 225's all around. I didn't stagger F and R cause I didn't want to roll my fenders, but you could if you did.

Good luck and have fun with the 18's. I agree, 17's just look too small on these cars!
