'01 E430 4matic, trade up to S430 ?

Looking to move into the S-class, however I currently have 4matic and many of the listed S classes currently are non AWD.

With the additional weight and LWB, along with snow tires be good enough to make it through a New England winter?

Any comments, and thoughts welcomed

Thanks

I think you can get 4Matic for free on the S-Class right now as long as its the W220 model.

I personally would not upgrade to the current S since you know it will be replaced in a few months and you will take a huge hit on the current S if you decide to buy it. Besides the current S430 will get terrible gas mileage compared to your E, and not to mention the W210 E is the most graceful vehicle out there.

Thanks for the comments MB Fanatic, I should have been more specific, I am in the market for a '02, maybe '03 S430/500, hopefully still under warranty and then be able to extend the certification.

I was given an '04 S430 as a loaner when I recently had work done on the E. I love the long lines of the S class, and super smooth ride

If you can get the 2003 S430/500 that would be well worth it because it has the restyled lights (front and rear), DVD Navigation, and PRE-Safe.

I would shoot for the S500 simply because you will aprreciate the power that 5.0 Litre V8 has. I would test drive a S430 and S500 and see which one you like best.

saw a sweet '01 S430 with AMG package, really nice!

Although I agee with your comment on the 500 V8, it did beoame a bit of a concern over the course of the 2 days I got to drive the 04 430. So it was a good test drive, and already owning a 4.3 V8 does make sense, if your going to upgrade might as well be worth while.

I wanted to hold back on driving the 500 so I didn't know what I was missing. It like the home theater, loudspeaker hobby, the more higher end the gear the better the sound, so it makes you desire the next level of higher fidelity.

So do you think with snow tires the RWD S is manageable?

With a good set of snow tires and ESP and all the other electronic gadgetry that the S has it would be more than manageable in the snow IMO.

That's a tough call, that all depends what you're willing to live wtih. The S class have more gadgetry than the E class has. If you want a larger car, that's your choice. If you're willing to deal with the traction of just RWD in slow, it may or may not be good in snow.

I test drove S4304matic and regular S500 on some MB driving event and didn't notice much difference. However I am not a good driver.
