Red face 1997 E-420 Type of engine oil

Hi, all my previous oil service my service shop puts Castrol 20W/50 oil. Today I took my car to new dealer in Santa Barbara, the dealer put Mobil 15W/40.

Is Mobil 15W/40 is ok for 1997 E-420?? I have always used before 20W/50.

Some of the research I did on web shows me that Mobil 15W/40 is for MB Diesel car.

Any feed back will be greatly appreciated.

Mobil One 15W/40 is more than fine with the engine, and in fact it might even be better than using that junk castrol oil. Mobil1 is a synthetic oil and is factory fill in all new Mercedes. I would use Mobil1 from now on if I were you.

Is Mobil 15W/40 Synthetic ???

Is Mobil 15W/40 synthetic? I thought 0W/40 is synthetic. I hate to use synthetic in my 97 E-420.

I believe Mobil 15W/40 is Minerial Oil.

Can you please check and let me. Thanks for your reply.

When I had my '97 E420 I was told by the dealer to specifically NOT use synthetic oil. That opinion has been seconded by my new guy - he's not a dealer, but he works on nothing but Benzes.

Sorry about the information guys. If you have the older engines like the 420, 300, or inline 6 320, then don't use synthetic. But if you have the V6 320, or the 430 then you should use synthetic.

I use Castrol Synthetic blend(synthetic and conventional mix) 20/50 and one bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer. I have the inline 6 also.

Exclamation change oil every 7500 miles as recommended by MB or should I do it every 3000 Miles.

MB Fanatic, Thanks for your feed back. I am very new to German cars. I got one more for you, What should be the period between oil changes, should I change oil every 7500 miles as recommended by MB or should I do it every 3000 Miles.

Any feed back will be appreciated.

I would stick with the 7500 mile intervals. Today's oils are designed not to be changed at 3K miles. You wont have anything to worry about, except you will be saving some money.
