Upsolute.com claims to have a chip. Seems promissing, I am seriously contemplating it.

All of them, as much as I can...
I don't think Upsolute makes it for the E420. I have it on the E430.
Performance had one for my E400. Try them.

I'm still intrigued by this chip, but I'm still wary of the long-term effects.

How noticeable is the power gain? 20 hp isn't all that much. I wouldn't think you'd feel any difference in a car this heavy...

what's your experience?

You should do a search and read up on it. The Upsolute chip issue has been hashed and rehashed in most of the MB forums. 20 horses is a LOT and you can definitely feel it on the buttdyno. I don't see how it would affect long term performance, as long as you stick to at least 92 octane gas or better.
Best mod bucks I spent on my E430 as well.

Upsolute does have one for the E420 - the guys in Austria confirmed that they have done some.
The rep is too far from where I live, so I have not yet figured out how to do it...

Sorry, my bad. Well, if you call the rep, he'll tell you how to work it. My rep was willing to work something out, like meet halfway or something. Least he can do is walk you through the procedure so you can send him the ECU.
Good luck, you won't be sorry.
