Today while driving I got "Brake lining wear" warning. I think this means my brake need to be service.

I got the part pricing from dealer as following.

Do any one know if I can find the thread where I can learn how to do this brake job by my self ? I have never done one.

What is the wheel seal for front wheel bearing ??

All feed back will be appreciated.

There are multiple threads on this Forum. Here is a good place to start:

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w210/107227-okay-brake-job.html

https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...ghlight=brakes

There is nothing to it.
After that, use the search feature on this Forum, read everything you can... after that git r done.

Wheel seal and wheel bearing.

Jimmy, thanks for information. It is very good.

Is any one know what is wheel seal and why this need to be serviced? One of the local German Autos is telling me that they need to check wheel bearing and lubricate them and install new wheel seal.

I don't understand why I need to check wheel seal and lubricate the bearings??

You can get brake pads for half the price that you posted. For a little more you can get crossed drilled rotors otherwise th price you posted seems high for standard ones. You should check too that you have 2 sensors on the rear pads. Mine only had one on the drivers side. The front sensors are like $3 each. The job is not hard to do at all. The toughest part was getting the rotors to come off.

Cool bearings and seals

I posted on a full brake job just recently so it's in this 210 forum including pricing and availability.

As far as the wheel seals, you don't need them unless you're going to replace or repack (grease) the front wheel bearings. At 112K on your E I would definitely be doing one or the other (probably repacking).

MBZ probably has it's own required grease as well, but the mobil1 synthetic grease is excellent.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Dude, order your parts at www.importedcarparts.com you will cut the total parts price to under $300. Brakes take about 20 minutes a wheel when you follow the directions.

Front Brake parts cost $250 on Web vs dealer cost $350

Dude Thanks for your help. I check my brakes today and found that I will need to replace front pads and rotor. The rear brakes looks good.

I check on different web sites for parts pricing and got front brake pads, rotos, sensor and wheel seal with free shipping for $250.

Which vendor parts are closed to MB OEM parts. For example for Rotor Zimmerman or Brembo. For front pads Textar, ATE, PBR or Pagid.

Which vendor should I use for Rotor and Brake Pads?

Any feed back will be appreciated. Thanks again for all the good information.

I usually go with Zimmerman rotors on the front. I think they are OEM for MB. As far as pads I have no clue what is OEM. I used Textar and had no problems.

If you do the rear brakes spend the extra $$ to get drilled rotors. I think MB somewhat mispecced the rear rotors so they have a tendency to warp.

Pad Info and Opinions

In my research before doing my own brakes I came upon this page which has a great discussion about the multiple Brake Pads on the market.

http://www.epsparts.com/category/chassisnumbertable/

There are lots of retailers of these parts (see above post). Ironically, before I ordered mine, I came upon a guy selling the entire package since he had sold the car he purchased them for prior to installation.

So, while I would have liked to have the cool cross-drilled rotors, I opted for the plain OEM version, since I have the factory alloys anyway. As for pads, reasonable minds will differ (just run a search!) but I am very happy with the Textar (yellow box) that I bought. I got the whole shebang (two rotors, two sensors, 4 packs of brake pad goo, and the Textar pads) for $140 including shipping cost.

And, if you have not gotten this by now, it is really easy. Read the post here, only do one side at a time, or use a digital camera if you need to remember how it came apart. Whole job took about 45 minutes from start to finish.

I'd recommend throwing in the screws that hold the rotor on. If you haven't done the brakes before you don't know what condition they are in. It would stink to get everything appart and have to go hunt one of those down. I think the cost less than a buck.

They look like the bolts to hold the rotors on. One for each rotor.

Two sets = 4 bolts, one for each rotor as Eklasse noted. MBZ also recommends threadlock for these and the caliper bracket mounting bolts, but you don't have to use theirs, you can use Loctite brand. I have seen some of the rotor lock bolts come with a blue thread-lock already applied, so if that's the ones you end up with you don't need to use more, but you'd still want to use it on the caliper bracket mounting bolts.

I didn't see the seals on your list, did you decide not to check the wheel bearings? If you want to pull and check them you will need new seals, and at your mileage I'd definitely be examining and repacking them at the least.

Good luck and enjoy the work!
Greg

I have bought wheel seals. I will try to re-packed Wheel Bearings and install new wheel seal. Does any one know what type of grease or lubricant MB recommend to be use for re-packing of bearing?

Front brakes...

If your rotors wore smoothly, chances are that you do not have to replace them for the time being. Rotors can last one or even two brake pad replacements. I did the front brakes on ours for about $50 for the pads and the 'paste'. I also ground down the sharp edge around the perimeter of the rotors. You will notice that this is where the brake wear sensors make contact with the rotor. I ground all four edges down so the next time around I will NOT get a premature warning when the brake pads are worn gain. :-)

Smile Finished installing front Rotor and Brake pads

I like to thanks all of you for the great information. Today I did front brake/rotor job with the help of friend.

It took us about 2 hours to remove old rotors and brake pads and install new rotors and brake pads.

Zimmerman Rotors and Textar [Yellow Box] brake pads.

Local MB dealer quote was $700
Local German Autos wanted $625
Another local shop wanted $550

DYI with help of friend was $290. Parts $230 and paid friend $60. My friend own a shop. So it was easier for me to use his lift and tools. My friend did 90% of the work.

You all save me at least $250. Thank you for great information on this forum.

Some notes from DIY rotor/brake job.

Front rotors were frozen. We put on it WD40 and 4-5 bang with hammer. That the part took most time.

Forgot to release the air pocket from brake lines. We did on each brake, remove the boots and did little pressure release and then brake works great.

http://www.importedcarparts.com/

Great price and good service. Thank you for recommending to me to buy parts from them. DHL ground delivery only took 2 days.

I am very .

This was my first DIY job on 97 E420.

Thank You!!

check out ImportecParts.com ... always the lowest for any parts I've looked for. Oddly though when I look at the brake discs from both websites all of the discs are less on ImportecParts.com except for the Zimmermans...
