Well i got a chance to drive an S500 for the first time today. Had to take my aunts car back to her house for her. I wasn't impressed at all with the car. It had good power, ride was too soft for me, also a ton of creaks and ****. Also didn't like the layout of any of the buttons in the car. It may sound crazy, but i like my E430 better. Just felt tighter all over. BTW, my aunts car is a 2003 with 30,000 miles on the clock.

Smile I second!

I test drove a 99 S430 and did not like it much. Other than the sheer size of this beast, there is not much to offer. Even the cluster is odd looking and ugly. My E420 is way tighter, sprintier, and modern looking (Inside). It is also hard to accelerate in that fat S-class body even with the 275HP V8.

Exactly, all the damn temp. control buttons were sooo small and hard to push, the window switches are waaaay down low on front part of the door panel. That is one monster back seat are though, haha. Yea , i thought the instrumentation wasn't too good either.

I drove an 05 model (hard!) at the 'I love mercedes' gig. I thought it was ponderous and just plain vanilla to drive. Like a very expensive, high tech Honda Accord.

We actually bought my parents an S class (S600 to be exact) and honestly I love the way it drives. Its not too sporty and not too bland in its driving characteristics. It all depends on whether or not ABC was active or not. I know for a fact that ABC does a much better job of handling body roll, dive, and squat more than Airmatic DC II does on my E55 and E350.

I love the cabin layout of the S class as everything is within easy reach and love the electroluminescent instrument cluster. I can't wait to see what the new S class will look like in person as this may very well be my next car.

The S is fine for people coming out of Caddys and Lincolns. Same float and roll but with a tighter feel overall. Not a "driver's car" but a "rider's car" IMHO.

Completely disagree. I test drove S500 and was really impressed. It handled as or even better than E430. I was surprised, because considered S much bigger and more bloat. But I was completely killed with performance, S is like a rocket, no usual E downshift lag. I won't tell you how beautiful S inside. I know that all impressed look of S, but inside it's much better. So, S is certainly the king of cars. Needless to say that I drove LS430 and 745, but S is something staying apart. I hope to buy it someday. No offence, but if you do not see difference, then you should drive corolla.
