Broken antenna on 2000 E430, looking for a fix
Hey 210 guys...
My father's E430's antenna broke. Im referring to the rubber 1.5 inch antenna on the back center of the roof. The rubber basically weathered and cracked and eventually fell off, so now the metal antenna itself is exposed and it looks awful. Anyone else have this problem? sorry i dont have a pic, the car is in TN. The dealer wants $500 to put a new one on, does anyone have an easier fix/upgrade for the problem? Thanks

Same thing happened to me. To fix it I went to the dealer and got a replacement rubber piece for a C-class. You can remove the cover for your broken antenna, I think with a hex wrench. The C-class piece is similar to but not exactly the same as the E-class part so I had to trim the bottom (carefully!) with a razor blade as it was to fat to fit all the way in the cover. Once you get a good fit just re-install the cover and you can't tell the difference. Hope this helps.

for folks looking for cheaper, you can browse the forums where some of the
most frugal have successfully used the cap off a ballpoint pen. threads created
identifying which specific pen might have just the right diameter cap.
but i feel that is the ultimate in penny pinching and it's like taping your eyeglasses
together with duct tape or something. bleh

I have 2001 e320 that has broken antenna. I found a plastic tool handle that fits almost perfectly. Use tiny amount to glue the antenna to the base old antenna base. Right size plastic pens work also.

I bought a new painted cap from the dealer and the tech (who was doing other things at the time) put it on for no charge. That cost a little over $200, way too much of course!

If I'm not mistaken that is the antenna for the analog based SOS system and isn't used for anything anymore. Perhaps if you use the old car phone interface it might be functional - but I think it's just for the obsolete analog signal.

I think you're correct Figuero. I know it's the antenna for the TeleAid system. I use the bluetooth puck and have a Motorola cradle and I'm pretty sure it works with the phone feature also.
