Question Can you open all windows with SmartKey?

Just got my 97 E420 and am surprised you can't open the windows with the remote. I've read through the manual and it seems you can only open the windows from the passenger side door with the actual key. What's up?????

yeah. I recently got a 97 E420 too, and I tried to open or close all the windows with the remote and it doesn't do it. Then, I try using the key, and it works. Oh well

All of them, as much as I can...
You CAN roll them down by double clicking the remote "open" button and pointed to the infrared sensor on the door handles.

edit: oops maybe not on the '97...I have '02.[I]

Ok..here is the scoop...I had to experiment. I have a early 97 e420...does not have the infrared port on the trunk or door handles.

If the windows are open and I arm the alarm and hold the button down,,,it rolls up the windows and sunroof

If the windows are up and I unlock disarm the alarm with the remote and hold the button down..the windows open, but not the sunroof.

If I hit the button on the remote 2 times quickly and hold it down on the 2nd time..the trunk pops open.

This is very cool. I would imagine it would be the same on the newer 97s. I still have the funky lights and the ugly knob on the review mirror just no green and red lights on the trunk and door handles.

You're right, I can get the windows to come down but only after I pop the trunk (not intentionally). Seems the sequence in which I am pushing the remote is wrong.

Twice quick seems to pop the trunk, twice slowly unlocks the doors and then locks the doors... What's the secret????????? I can't believe I can't get this right....!!!!!!!!!!1

I am totally awestruck:

Do you guys have a different SmartKey? I have 2000 E430 4matic. I don't have a window button on the key. Just lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. This sounds like a neat trick. I had a friend who had a Jetta who thought she was all that because she could put her windows down with the remote; I was like "Damn, VW has Benz beat on that one."

Do you just use the regular unlock button? If it weren't 100 degrees out at 8p.m., I might go outside to experiment...

96 and 97 E class cars have a different remote than the 98 and newer cars. We only have one button on the remote...By holding it down or pushing it twice you can do different things with it.

All of them, as much as I can...
program is erratic on my '02...
either press and hold open door button, once, twice, sometimes thrice.
but only aimed at door sensors.

Well after a month of punching two times, three times, fast and slow, I gave up. Up windows I can do, down only after a few attempts and the trunk pops open.

Anyone watching me in a parking lot assumes I am an idiot as my lights, trunk and windows go up and down, on and off while I stand and point my remote at the car.

I'll just get in and roll them down.

DWM have you tried visiting your ocal dealer and ask for assistance? You don't need an appointment for this, unless they determine there is something wrong with the car.

Visiting the dealer would be an obvious choice. Since the manual only explains Up Windows, I assumed the down function was not available.

But with that said, I am compiling a list for my next visit to the dealer including very poor AM reception, noisy seats, and a little shake at 50 mph in the front. Guess I'll add the easy question of how to lower the windows.

Talking Getting the windows down w/ Remote

I've got to say that i was excited after reading that someone was able to get their windows to come down with the remote.

After about 30 minutes of giving the battery on my car remote a serious workout, i was able to consistently get the windows to come down.

It seemed to work the exact same opposite way of putting the windows up by holding down the button on the first push of the remote.

I have a late model 97 E 420

With the Red/Green lights on the driver door, the trunk, and the rear mirror.

If anyone else is able to get the windows to open consistently in a 97 E class, please share.

I'll try it again, but I've had no luck with that approach.

Can you re-state how you came to get them to come down???

Thanks for sharing the information...

I haven't tried Patrick's trick on my E Class yet but on MY 02 and above, it's a function you have to program onto the smartkey. the instructions are in the manual. I programmed ine to open and close with the smartkey.

97s have different keys than 98 and above....97 key has only 1 button, but can do different things depending on the push sequence.

Haha that's a good visual and I remember the Navigator ad on TV. Just try to do it to a beat
So just turn the sounds up and then sip the Latte when you get in...
