why does the c43 have more hp?

why does the c43 have 302 hp. and tq. and the e430 only 276 hp. Is it the exhaust, ecu, air intake, cams?? both have the same motor?

Same displacement certainly doesn't mean the same motor This is a large portion of the price difference between a sport and an AMG model vehicle. There's a lot more to the motor than bolt-on parts that any shadetree mechanic could perform. Look how hard it really is to squeeze another 30 HP out of that E430 motor!

Does anyone know the specific difference? They are the same base engine? I know that AMG hand builds the motors, but does anyone know what voodoo they do? I would think they certainly have a more efficient intake and exhaust.

AMG engine has different cams, different ECU parameters and different exhaust...That's the 30 odd horses....

Agreed, a 30 odd HP increase is achievable with an ECU remap+performance camshafts+stronger valve springs+tubular headers+hi-flo filters and exhausts......at least that's what tuners like MKB, Kleemann & Carlsson are claiming.

I agree with dafi in that the difference is probably due to the cams, ECU, and maybe the exhaust. The only engine AMG has designed and built from scratch is the new 6.3L NA engine. All previous AMG engines were based on existing MB engines, although hand built with some performance parts.

Let us not forget... The C43 has 11:1 compression whereas the E430 has 10:1. Also, the C43 curb weight 3440lbs... E430 is 3985lbs. Every 100lbs is 1/10th of sec...

from an online source....
"Although the 4.3-liter V8 is basically the same as that used other Benzes, internal modifications by AMG result in 302horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque. A near back-to-back comparisonwith a new CLK430, which has the stock, 275-horsepower version ofthe same engine, was most enlightening. If the C43 has only 27 morehorsepower, they're large horses. There is enormous powerimmediately, and it never fades."

But just like every other AMG engine (except for the M156) it is based on a base Mercedes engine.

The 430 also has 300-lbs of torque. Take out the 500 pounds of dead weight and we have a pretty similar car.

The C43 is rated at least 3 miles per gallon less than an E430. It would appear that more horsepower comes with increased fuel flow.
