Thumbs down 97 E420 Driver side seat making popping noises

I have a 97 E420 sport with about 60K miles. The driver side seat making noise is very annoying. I saw that there are other people here who have experienced the same problem. Is there a recall for this problem?

Another thing that I want to share with MB owners in Chicago land Area is that MB of Naperville are rip offs. I had a very bad experience with them about a month ago. I took my car in to get my passenger side fog light bulb changed. They told me that it is not the bulb but its the harness that had gone bad and it would cost me 200 dollars to get the harness replaced. After hearing this I took the car to my Uncle's garage and all that needed to be replaced was the fog lamp which had blown out. It cost me 7 dollars for the bulb. Since the replacement of the bulb the fog lamp has been working fine.
After all this I called the MB of USA to complain and this is what the manager on duty at time told me "This is not our problem. All dealers are independently owned you would have to take it with them." Can you believe this nonsense

My seat makes a pop sound somewhere in the back whenever I put weight on it (by speeding up quickly). Is this what you are hearing?

Yes, it is this click noise which comes from the railing. I took the car to the dealer to get it checked out and they told me that its the railing and would cost 1200 to get fixed. When I asked them what caused this their response was that a heavy person sitting on the seat can cause it. I am 6'1" and wiegh 185lbs

Hmmm...
I'm 6' and 235lbs so I guess I'm way too fat for the seats. Funny how the C280 seats I had before didn't pop, nor did the Nissan seats before that, and so on and so on.

Guys, I'm 5'11 and 150, pretty much a damn rail, due to high metabolism. My seat does the same thing, under hard braking or sometimes when I just plop down into it, creaking underneath the seat, it pisses me off. I took it into the dealer, they supposedly fixed it and covered it under warranty, and it still creaks. Has anyone solved this!?

Driver side seat making popping noises

I have a 98 E300TD and the same thing happend to me @ 47k mi. I am 6' 145 and when I would speed up or apply the breaks I would hear a popping noise. I took it to my dealer and they said that the seat rails had to be replaced (thank god it was under warranty) It is a very pricey thing to fix from what I hear. I am just wondering when its going to start doing it again. I did purchase the extended warranty with the car, but it only covers just so much. Hope this answers some questions.

My driver's side was replaced early on. The noise reappeared in the driver's and started on the passenger's. My dealer replaced the seat lower frame in both cases. So far, the noise has not reappeared. I traced the problem to the inboard, lower, forward pivot point. There is an angle bracket which appears to develop clearance causing the problem. The actual rails are not the problem, despite what some uninformed service advisor might think. My dealer has been very, very good at helping. If the noise reappears I may experiment at re-engineering the bracket myself.

VinceC,

Any news on re-engineering the seat frame. I have been having this problem and my Dealer said it's not covered under starmark warranty and it will cost $850.00 to fix. I told them to not fix it.

From reading on this topic it seems liek the replacement frames will eventually do the same thing after a while.

After I took it back to the dealer a second time (and for other things) they replaced the seat rails under warranty - this was a few years ago...no creaks since..

I haven't had a problem since the problem was corrected. That has been quite a while now. Obviously, I haven't needed to come up with a fix.

Popping seat club? I´m a member since 2003.

Vince has perfectly explained what I also realized a year ago.
It´s the clearance of a rivet, not the rail. I spray lubricant in that point every two months or so and the noise is quiet until now. Of course if I forget to do it the noise reappear and reminds me.

Thanks Rafael,

Can you please post a pic of the place you spray lubricant on?

Also anyone know the part number of the replacement frame and cost of the part.

Thanks in advance.

Here you go!

Interior - Seat Cushion Rocks Makes Cracking Noises

Date: October 13, 2004

Order No.: P-B-91.10/83

Supersedes:

Group: 91

SUBJECT:
Model 210.020/025/055/065/070/072/074/082/083/265/282

Seat Cushion Rocks When Braking and Accelerating or Makes a Cracking Noise

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles that the front of the seat cushion rocks when braking and accelerating or makes a cracking noise, this may be caused by excessive clearance for the stepped bolt. To resolve, install replacement bolts with an 0-ring which are available as spare parts for seats with the height adjustment mechanism manufactured by Brose. A label identifying the seat height adjustment manufacturer can be found on the mechanism (Figure 1).

1. Adjust the seat cushion to the maximum height.

2. Remove affected seat per WIS document AR91.10-P-1000F.

3. The stepped bolt is now visible just below the lower edge of the seat covering or upholstery near the front on both the left and right sides (Figure 2).

4. Remove original bolt (Figure 3, left bolt) and replace with new bolt with 0-ring (Figure 3, right bolt) on both the door side and tunnel side of the front seat together with a new crimp nut.

5. Reinstall affected seat following WIS document AR91.10-P-1000F.

The part number you need is A210 919 00 15. The bolts cost $3.00 apiece and you need 2 per seat.

Wow thanks alot. $3/piece seems like a cheap fix, $crew the stealership for quoting me $850.

Hopefully the bolts will work and I don't need the frame.

Just join the link below. Once you are in, add your benz to the vehicle list and then do a search for "seats". Then look under "All technical service bulletins for seats". Click on Popping seats and it will show your pics and the part number. This site is good for other problems as well.

I just had mine "fixed" for the fifth friggin time while it was in the shop for other warranty work. They said I was good to go and they used "O-rings" for the seat bolts. I still squeaks like crazy. I am 5'11" @ 182lbs... so it seems I have been a member and didn't even now it... It is going back this week to get fixed... again... but this time... I am bringing the printout... Warranty is up May 06.....

Hey fellas, Is this it??

I came upon some pics. Just wondering if this is the problem bolt. I replaced mine with no luck. Seems to be in the rails themselves in my case. I did tug on the rails with the seat out of the car and the popping noise was still there. So my tracks will pop with the seat out of the car, and these bolts weren't the issue. Any other ideas?
