97 E320 CD changer. Fiber?
I've just purchased a 97 with no cd changer in the trunk. I'm reading the forums and see that some are fiber and some are not.
I need to purchase one - either a used stock model or an aftermarket that I can plug in... I was told an Alpine with a Blitzsafe adaptor would work for my car, but still don't know if this is fiber or copper.
Anyone know?

Go w/ the OEM unit. W/ aftermarket unit, adaptor could be PITA

I have an Alpine CD changer with adapter in my car. Works perfectly.
The advantage of going the Alpine route is that you can buy a CD changer like the Alpine CHA-S634, which plays MP3/WMA files burned to CD.

I experienced the same dilemma as you when I bought my '97; thought about all options (fm converter with changer in trunk; changing the head-unit to Apline, which requires re-wiring to all speakers; ...)
finally, zam sold me his used changer and it took me all of 5 minutes to install; the wiring is all ready to accept the mercedes changer, plug and play as they say
do a search with model # 3196, and make sure it comes with the metal casing ("mounting brackets")
