Rear window fell of track....what do I do?

Well the rear window of my E430 fell off the track (Im assuming) and is now inside the door. So basically I have no rear window. Should I take it to my local MB dealer or would another import shop be capable of doing this job? I can hear the motor turning and it sounded like it was chewing the tint off my window. Anyone else had this happen? If so what is the max and min I should be looking at to fix this?

Thanks,

Paul

Your window regulator just broke, very common problem on the W210 model. Part will run you around $80, if you're willing to spend time to search & read instruction on this site, and have a rivet tool, you should be able to do it. First time might take you an hour or two, but next time on (chance is, it'll break again), probably 1/2 hours.

Shop might quote you anywhere from $100-500 for labor, and sure mark up in part. I know some shop even state that the whole motor need to be replaced (crook !!!), which run the bill to a $1K easily.

I just second day aired it for $80 and found a guy who works at a local import shop to do it on the side. After I posted this I did some research and found out what it probabaly was. So my final cost will be around $130 total. I know I could do it, but I dont have the time during the week and rain is in the forecast.

Thanks,

Paul

Same thing happened to my E430 last week!

Very straight forward job to replace. Look around the DIY section, there's a great write-up with pics of how to do it.

I removed the inner door panel and pushed the glass back into position and then wedged it with a long piece of wood. This isn't a long term fix, just until the new regulator arrives.

And here's the good part, I found a regulator for $15.59 at www.partstrain.com It hasn't arrived yet, so I'll reserve final judgement until it does but it could be the silver lining to the bust window cloud.

I think the trickiest part of the job will be drilling out the old rivets (one of mine has 'stripped' already). As the post above says, should take an hour or two first time around. Just take your time and have a beer to hand.

This happened to me the same day I purchased the car for my wife. We put the window back up and disconnected the regulator motor. I can't roll the back windows down anymore, but I never really had a reason to in the first place - nor can I think of a reason I would want to in the future either.

Nellie B,

How did you replace the rivet @ the 12 O'clock position without removing the "sheet metal"?? The other 3 rivets were easy to replace.

Hi:

I punched the center of the rivet out with a punch and then drilled it through. Key thing is to use the right sized drill bit - if you've popped the other rivets out already, size the drill bit using the holes.

I had one rivet which simply span on the end of the drill bit so I ground that off with a grinding wheel attachment.

I've done the windows twice now and have the process nailed down.

Good luck, take your time and have a beer,

- Nellie
