There is another way to replace the blower motor regulator in 1996-97 W-210that doesn't require buying a new blower motor, regulator, air box cover and wiring adapter or buying a regulator for the W-140 and splicing it into the old wiring harness.

K-A-E make a blower motor regulator (resistor is their term for it) that is a direct replacement for the old style that is no longer available from MB. It is part # K-A-E 3.701.420. Although the base plate of the regulator is slightly larger and differently shaped from the original part the screw holes line up perfectly and and the wiring harness is direct plug and play into the original motor and chasis wiring harness.

I recently installed this unit in my 97' E320 and it works perfectly, in fact, I think the new unit blows a bit more air at the upper settings than the old one did. I removed the blower motor from the dash to make the installation but I think this unit could be installed by simply removing the underdash pad and the airbox cover and leaving the motor and blower fan installed. I found mine on eBay from All European Auto Supply

Mine went bad and I was having a whine noise coming from my motor, so I decided to replace the it with the redesigned unit. I got the motor, cover and resistor for $400. I put it in at halftime of the laker celtic game #5, and it works great! I was going to modify it but when I heard the motor I said "screw it" and got the new unit and man is it quiet, came with a one year warranty, that's what put me over the top on it. who wants to buy all my old stuff?...........j/k

Man, I'm stumped.
I bought the KAE replacement (140-821-8351); wired it up and soldered everything really nice but when I went to plug it in - it was "live", even though the car was off.

So I did some research and found one pther post which had the same issue - and the poster reversed the blue and black wire and it worked.

Sooo I did that too, and same problem - power to the blower even though the car is off.

So my problem is I'm getting power when I plug the harness back in, even though the car is off.

I triple checked everything - I mean it's a basic project; black to black, red to red, yellow to yellow.

WTF happened? 98 E320

I bought that one, received it in two days. Took longer to get the blower out of the car than it did to switch the regulator.

As an update to my above problems - it was in fact a bad regualtor. The regulator was "Open" and when connected to the harness, it would engage the motor even though power was off.

So for research purposes -

If you wire the replacement regulator and the motor turns on when you plug in the harness (even though car and air power is off), you got a bad regulator.

Don'y try to re-wire it different or do any further diagnostics. Simply return the regulator for a new one.

Mine is all better now and blowing like a *****

Tony, Somebody help!

Hi there,

I have '99 E300 TD.
Blow mortor is weak, so I was hoping to use W 120 replacement regulator to fix the problem.

I got the KAE replacement part but when I took out the Blow Mortor Assembly, I found a Behr A210 821 15 51 regulator plate - see attched photo. I can't attched the replacement regulator!

What are my options? Any advice?

Thanks and regards

Dominic

This thread sure came in handy. Took my time and just got it done. $170 and some time is a whole lot better than $800-$1000!

Here's a picture of what's inside that regulator. That plus some wires hardly seems to justify the $170.

Firstly, special thanks to Tony who has saved us all money and stuck it to the dealer who quoted my $920$ to fix my regulator.

Below you will find the link to the part that was supplied to me for 89$ from Deutsche Parts...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

I installed as above and the AC and fan worked perfectly. One important note; someone above made a remark about the slight humming noise their fan was making. I need to tell you mine made that noise as well which made me think maybe there was a problem with the fan (blower) as well. Needless to say, the blower works just fine and it was ONLY the regulator fix that solved ALL problems I was having. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions...

Thanks all...

Thumbs up Worked for me!

The DIY worked like a charm. After changing the regulator, and charging the freon, I damn near needed a hat, coat and gloves.

Thanks.

Smile Worked GREAT!

Thanks TONY, the DIY regulator fix works great. My son and I did it in under 1 hour. He had the fun job of squeezing under the dash between the seat and I handed him the tools. The soldering was a breeze as were the cool results!

Works!

Thanks!
Not being a DIY guy, I ordered the part, took the instructions to my shop and had them do the work.
Charged me an hour labor.
They were very impressed with the process and said they will offer t as an option to customers.

Thumbs up IT WORKED! Another satisfied customer :-)

Thanks Tony, you just saved me a ton of money - You da man!

I ordered the regulator from AutoHaus after the blower which used to only run at half speed finally gave up the ghost and stopped working all together. Since it had operated first at full speed, then for so long at half speed, and then finally wouldn't blow at all, it made sense that it was most likely the regulator and not the blower motor itself.

The whole process took me about an hour, but only because I got a little OCD on the soldering.

Thanks again! A forum is only as good as its members and this one is GREAT!

Hey guys. This fix went perfectly. I used the KAE part from Autohausaz, at $170.oo.
Must be a run on that part since the price came up a little.

After looking over the old part I realized why it didn't last. The part was French made. Not only that, but the heat sink portion is nearly 1/2 the size of the KAE part (which is german).
Benz aught to know better that that.

Anyways, like another poster sez. "It'll blow yer hat off!"
This fix was on a '96' E-320. It got cold in the Chitown winters up here. Thankful I found this fix before I gave up and paid for repairs.

another option for blower regulator replacment

K-A-E makes a blower motor regulator (resistor is their term for it) that is a direct replacement for the old style that is no longer available from MB.

I found mine on eBay from All European Auto Supply
http://www.alleuro.com/
I have a '98e320 wagon w/ the old style regulator. I purchased the part mentioned above from all european auto supply for $236+shipping. Their part # is 2108219951. It is KAE brand (3.701.420 is on the box). Looks exactly like roring's part from his repair(the last picture) with the plug from the original harness. Got it today and installed it in about 20 minutes(had removed blower earlier in the week) Doesn't get much easier than this and no soldering/splicing required. Blows like a champ. Thanks to tony and rander!

Hicks97...did you ever figure out what was wrong with your a/c? Was it the regulator like most everyone else or something else? I was reading the forum and never saw your fix. Please let me know. Thanks.

1998 E300 Turbodiesel-drove for ten years/165k miles
I figure Dominic Chang has already figured this out, but I have his same type of regulator, in an E300TD manufactured in June 97 as a 1998 model. The car has 162k miles on it, and going strong except for an extremely weak fan. I'm hoping this does the trick. Just ordered the part (after buying the WRONG earlier version on Ebay) from Autohaus AZ. My receipt from them is for the following:

2108211551 Blower Motor Resistor/Regulator; Late Version with Female Connector</pre> Perhaps this will help someone avoid the problem I've had. Again, the regulator for a 1998 Model E Class Mercedes is pictured above in Dominic Chang's post.

Just Installed It...

Just put in the part from AutoHaus AZ, the curved plate with what they describe as a "female" connector. Blows great. Got sparks a couple of times while taking it out, though...I would highly recommend pulling the back seat and disconnecting the battery before removing the old one. My battery (positive side) needed an open end wrench in a metric size that I didn't have on hand, but I found the correct one in the trunk mounted toolkit in my little BMW convertible (!)
