Angry Engine sound

I have 2000 E320 with 59k miles, in the moring when i start it idles ok, after the idle it starts a noise like an engine knock noise. more like tappign sound. I already replace the spark plug, dealer replaced both Cat converters right and left, oil has been changed, new dealer air filter. What could it be causing this engine sound? But when I drive away and engine at normal operating temp, the sounds goes away completely.

Could be the fan belt tensioner, can you see any vibration on it??
If yes it's it.

could be a few things

Valve lash adjusted, sticky lifter, tensioner pulley. Not major issues, but could be if gone untreated.

if its a hizzing or tick sound. it could be your water pump. its about to break down. but to make sure, just take your car to the mechanic and settle down.

Perhaps ...

MODEL 210 with M112/M113 Engines
HYDRAULIC ELEMENTS "TICKING" NOISE DURING INITIAL OVERNIGHT AND/OR
COLD STARTS

In cases of hydraulic elements "ticking" noise during initial overnight and/or cold starts, replace the exhaust valve hydraulic elements with hydraulic elements part number 113 050 00 80 05. Note: Please DO NOT replace the rocker arm assembly, part no. 113 050 05 34. Replacing the rocker arm assembly to
repair hydraulic elements "ticking" noise is absolutely not necessary and extremely labor intensive. In case of warranty, please use Damage Code 05319 36

It's not a recall, but if you have a complaint under warranty, it will be fixed. Normally just the one ticking one.

This is the sort of information you can have if you buy the Mercedes service DVD.

Noise at startup?

So what was the final answer to the noise at startup? Was it replacing the parts quoted by lkchris on the exhaust valves? I have the same clattering at cold statups which lasts about 10 seconds and then goes away. Will this damage anything or is it just irritating? What should the costs be? Anyone?

Make sure it isnt your purge VALVE I have worked on plenty of benz's with the owners stating what you just did ! The purge valve will tick every 8th of a second.
Chances of it bieng an exhaust valve is very slim!
If it is a lifter if left alone it will chatter up your cam therefore it will be very expensive!!
Bring it to a shop see what they say..

when i took my car for an oil change last time, i mentioned it to the dealer. he asked me to leave it overnight to check out the engine sound. I have not done so yet. When I do I will rpt back to all. However, the dealer did say it is possible a dirty lifter and it is nothing serious to worry about. But u know the human nature !!! I must take it in when i have xtra $$$ !!

Noise at startup FOUND

Not stickey lifters! This one is a bit. I opened the hood and found that the fan was hitting the radiator fins towards the bottom of the radiator. Thoughts of $$$$ went through my head thinking about the costs ofa new radiator but it looks worse than what it actually is. Since it has been cold the fan would start but then stop after about 20 seconds. I checked underneath and found that the bracket that holds the radiator was pushed up and back and the radiator rubber knob that normally fits snug into a hole in the bracket was popped out allowing the radiator to move about. My wife had popped over a concrete parking stop a few months ago and at first it didn't look like there was any damage and I forgot about it.

A rubber mallet and a piece of 2"x2"x36" wood allowed me to pop the bracket down and reposition it (hydraulic jack) so the rubber knob popped back into place securing the radiator. Started it up and no more clattering! It could have been very expensive.
