Brand new paint can never match the same color code of paint that has been sitting in the sun/rain/snow for 10 years. A real good paint shop mixes to adjust the shade, and obviously this was not a real good paint shop. You are better off painting the entire car now.

In addition to the painter custom tinting the paint to match they will often paint any adjacent panels (IE if you are replacing a fender he would paint the hood and door) blending the new paint across the adjacent panels so it is a gentle fade and is less detectable. It sounds like you went to a shop that does not do very high quality work or perhaps you were not totally clear on what you expected from them.

I was in a color matching technology for my past company for years and it's almost impossible to color match paint (new vs.old) , and also because of the sheen due to aging effect

Good Luck

Good Luck
my car is garaged about 98% of the time...detailed monthly so the paint is in pristine condition. i got a minor dent in my hood so that needs to be repaired and painted. i will be taking it to a high quality body shop, but I'm wondering how close could they get to matching the original paint? I heard silver is hard to match and there could be a slight variation at certain angles. any tips would be appreciated!

Silver is very hard color to match thats why a good quality body shop will blend your two fenders so it looks even.

If the dent is small enough and not too near the fenders they can probably blend the paint across the hood. If its large, near the fender, or the whole hood is replaced they will probably need to blend the paint across the fenders.

Paint analysis comes under several factors.
- Mercedes batch number based on age of car
- UV exposure
- Paint code

My car has 1 paint code and 5 variation codes based on the age.

Paint matching is an artform and only people who have been active in the area for a long time actually get great results.

Color matching is an art!

With metallic colors you also need to match the same spray techniques. Even paint shot from the same can have different shades when dry. Fast drying or a thin coat of paint will have a lot of sparkle and appear light. Slow drying or thick paint, where the flakes sinks to the bottom layer and get covered more by the pigment, will look darker.

A competent shop with a good painter is expensive and worth it!

That's why every vehicle I buy is 'white'; metallic colors are beautiful, until it's time for a repair... even small rock chips aren't as noticeable than a metallic.
