Power Windows go down but not up

I have a 1998 E300 which seems to be having minor problem after minor problem. My wife thinks the car is a lost cause but I try to have hope. I really do like driving the car. The other day all of my power windows stopped rolling up. They roll down just fine. When you push the up switch you can feel the motor click but it doesn't have any power to actually roll up the window. Please help.

Ohh you mean all four sides wont roll up? hmmm it seems all the rotors are all fine since they make a click sound everytime you roll the windows up. Unfortunately, some kind of latch broke. I had this problem before. This is a common problem for w210. The parts for this costs $110. Not sure, but around there. Plus another $70-$100 for labor. And this is only for one side. I hope that would help.

The window regulators are notoriously bad (poorly designed according to a tech I asked). But, it is hard to believe all 4 could have gone bad at the same time. This is not coming from a mechanic, but I think you have a problem other than the regulators.

The auto roll up feature can become disabled by a battery disconnect (replacement). Do a soft touch to roll up windows and hold down button for a couple of seconds and you will hear a soft click as the windows resync for the auto feature. Happy Motoring RTFM

Thanks for the advice but I still don't roll up. I tried putting all of the windows up and holding the switch(es) down for 10 or 15 seconds. No improvement. There is a clik and jerk when you push on the window switch but the motor doesn't have any power to roll up the window. All of the windows still roll down with no problem. Please help. I would love for this to be a software type glitch.

My left rear window was doing this same thing, rolling down, but not going back up. I took the shotgun approach and went to the dealer for a new motor and a new window regulator. I suspected it was the motor but wasn't going to tear the door panel off to replace one part only so I did both at the same time. The regulator I took out is fine. Must have been the motor.

It's hard to believe all four of your windows are doing it. It makes me think think there's something electrical going on like not enough amperage going to the window motors. I hope you get it fixed. Please let us know when you do.

okay! if it still make the click sound everytime you roll up your window. well, its not the motor but its some kind of latch that holds the window up and down. it got stock or something thats why the motor have no enough power to roll it up or hold it up. i have this problem twice. mostly likely it costs $230 per window. this includes parts and labor.

I had this problem after replacing a broken regulator and fixed it while tinkering with the switch, but didn't understand how it suddenly just started working. A week later, yes one week, my alternator went out. After I replaced that and reconnected the battery, all the windows started acting funny. going down, but jerkily going up and needing to be manually pushed up. I found Luke's post and used "a soft touch" instead of jamming it down and sure enough, there is a slight click a second after it goes up. They all work great now!
Thanks again!

+1 on this. This just happened to me after having my battery disconnected. I was very confused and thought my windows were not going up but the soft touch was still working. Eventually they all kicked back in and started functioning.

What is a "soft touch"?
I just replaced the battery tonight.
Rolled down the windows.....and there they sit.....won't go up.

The window switches have two positions for both up and down. Touch and hold lightly and the window moves as long as there is pressure on the switch. Press firmly to engage the 'express' feature. Release and the window continues on it's own until fully up or down. When the battery looses voltage or is disconnected the express feature stops working. Raising the window all the way and holding the switch down for about 4 seconds resets the express feature. Sometimes referred to 'resyncing'. Same procedure for the sunroof.

Thanks.
Yep....very familiar with the 'resyncing' procedure.....it's same w/ Porsches.
My issue last night was that none of the 4 windows would go up.....at all.
Negative 3 degrees out here last night and all the windows were down.

I learned that the 'soft touch' means just that.....slightly, just slightly depress the window buttons and you can work the window up. After the car runs awhile (after batt change) it seems that functions return. We'll see today.

you may have a bad window switch group.. have you used the key and hekd the lock button aimed at the Ir receiver, or used the blade key in the door hand to Lock the doors (keep key turned in lock position the windows should roll up,,, try using the rear door window switches and see if the rears windows work...

or the windows are out of sync.. don't forget to do the sunroof.

Always look for the simple solution first. A bad switch group is very very unlikely.

This is merely a resyncing of the windows and sunroof. Hold each switch lightly in turn...all the way up...hold for 5 seconds...then all the way down again...hold for 5 seconds....that will do it.

I realize this thread is ten years old, but I just had this problem and the 'soft touch' sync fixed it. Thanks Luke M and thank god for the internet.
