SRS Light - Do all Airbags shut off?

I have an issue were the SRS light is on all the time now in my wife's car. When I'm with my wife (read - when there is a person in the passenger seat), the light turns off.

In reading the forums, I figure it probably is the seat sensor cable that is located on the back of the seat that is losing conictivity (as I found out, common issue).

However, my concern is does this just shut off the one passenger airbag, or all of them?

The other part is does anybody have a detailed explination of what could be done to splice the cable back together? Car is out of warranty and stuff, and I am rather adventursome knowing I don't really have too much to lose on this issue.

Can someone please jump in and answer this? My SRS light came on this last weekend and has been on since.

Thanks.

Got a ridiculous quote to have this sensor replaced in the bottom of the seat. Does anyone know a solution to bypass that stupid sensor? So that way the airbag is always on? Who puts a kid in the front seat anyway?

What was the quote?

A friend overseas did the job by himself, and he described the entire procedure to me, and it was a pain in the ***...seat must come out, leather peeled off, etc. Plus the sensor itself runs $200++

I'd like to see his process if you can get it. In my case I almost sure it is a worn cable. Every so often when a passenger is in the seat the light will go off. I just with there was a small chip switch that could be plugged into the module to just trick it into thinking there is somebody there 100% of the time. In an accident - do you really think I'm worried about NOT deploying an airbag?

I'd have to physically show you based on my memory. Unfortunately, the person who did it subsequently rear-ended another car while he was in the passenger seat, went through the windshield and has been in a coma for the last 18 months (ironic if it had been his car in the accident).

There are 4 bolts holding the seat, two in front and two in the rear. These come off, then you pull out the seat being careful not to yank the cable lines. These should then be unplugged, and the leather peeled up and back from the front edge, much like peeling the skin off a cadaver. The sensor is a flat pancake that covers the entire seat bottom. From there it should be plug and play.

I'd like to try examining the plug itself. Do you know exactly where it is?

If you look under your passenger seat from the front - I have noticed a lot of wires coming from the floor into the motor connections at the base of the seat. 3 plugs in total that I noticed. I'm thinking (based on other threads - I don't know for sure) that the yellow plug is the Airbag plug.

Sorry to hear about your friend - hope he gets well soon.

Thanks, but he'll be a quadraplegic if he ever regains consciousness. It's what happens when you are street racing with no seatbelts and a random vehicle pulls out in front of you. I should post that in Kill Stories.

Anyway, I wonder if the cables can be replaced somehow.

By the way, in my case, the light began to go on erratically, then it became a matter of how my passenger shifted weight to get it to go off, then it failed full time. I'd guess yours will degrade in the same fashion.

So, when the light is on, that means the driver's side airbag is still functional, but the passenger side is not?

Again...how much was your quote? I'm getting ready to take my car in to have it looked at and am curious as to how hard I'm gonna laugh at them when they quote me a price......

It's amazing how many people suffer from this. There should be a service bulletin issued.

That's the thread that gave me the yellow connection information.

Quote

Quote was for like 3.5 hours of labor @ $75.00/hr, i think parts and labor was around $475.
