Metal knock underneath car

Hi All,

I need help. My 01 E320 4Matic has this metal knock. I suspect it is metal because when I occassionally turn or go over a pothole/bump, the noise echos and lasts for half a second. I moved the exhaust pipe around but couldn't duplicate the problem.

Any takes or similar experience?

Thanks

Thanks for the response.

I'm thinking, if it is the resonator or cat, shouldn't there be a sound even at idle?

The metal noise only occurs when I turn or hit a pothole, not when idling or going in a stright line without hitting potholes...

You will hear a sound at idle as the cat deteriorates over time.

The noise seem to be on the passenger side, and it seems to be coming from somewhere near the trunk. I had my cat replaced by the dealer 2 years ago already so it is not the rattling noise that i've heard of before. It sounds like a spring or a metal impact... not quite sure. I rock the car up and down but I can't replicate the noise...only on occassional bumps and turns. Any other ideas? Could it be a worn rubber spring stop or something?

It might be possible that your spring pad is worn out.
