Do you park your car outside?

I recently moved (thanks b*tch) and the car now sits outside with no garage time. If I wax the car once monthly will that be enough protection or should I by a cover? I am concerned about the upincoming Florida summer heat. Seems like the paint on these cars is pretty decent although the paint chips easily. I hate the thought of it sitting in the sun everyday. Its not my daily driver. Kind of a dumb question but do car covers really make that much of a difference?

wax will not prevent (though it may help a scootch) sun/UV fade. if you
continuously park facing one direction (eg to the West) the driver/south side
will receive the bulk of the exposure and will lighten vs the pax/north side
of the vehicle. get a cover, car port, rent a garage, etc if you are intent on
maintaining the nice finish.

Just in case if we have anyone in the Southern Hemisphere reading this, your the side continuously parked on the Northern side will experience greater fading than the Southern side.

Raymond's intuition applies for Bossman123's scenario since Bossman123 lives in the Northern Hemisphere.

Bossman123: I suggest that you buy a cover. It's a wise investment. Continue to wax the car once a month or every other month, wash it bi-monthly, remember to wash the cover monthly, and keep the car covered.

parking outside

I park my car outside, but since I work during the day the car is parked outside only during the evening and night. I work at a place that has an inside garage, so the car is ok.

Most people drive to work and park outside during the day so I do not think you need to worry too much. If people drive all day, the car is in the sun all day. I do not think it can be a big deal about the sun unless you leave it in one place for months at a time.

If you park outside at home and don't have to go to work, I envy you.

i have a garage, nonetheless, i use a car cover from Costco so when the dog
walks by, his metal tags or whever, won't touch the car. it also keeps garage
dust off....etc etc.

I have to agree w/ STS. It's obviously preferable to garage a car whenever possible, but for those of us who use the car for daily drivers, frequent washing and waxing will go a long way toward keeping the finish looking great despite the extra UV exposure. I don't have a garage here, but I do at work - so especially in the spring and summer, when it gets hot, I will park the car inside, when the sun is strongest (during the day).

That said, we're shopping around for a new place, and first on my list of amenities is a garage

No,no, not at all. That's a very valid thought. I wouldn't have thought of it myself. But once you mentioned it, it got me to thinking and I just wanted to add in my two cents for the people who lived in the Southern Hemisphere. All the credit goes to youfor coming up with the thought as it is very true. It was a pleasure for me to see such insightful intuition.

No, the coriolis effect definitely doesn't have anything to do with it in my opinion.

If we want to get really technical, we can have a nice long chat about wavelengths. Fortunately for Bossman, the car is silver which reflects most of the sun's rays (black attracts all of them).

Once again raymond g-, that was a very scientific thought that definitely applies to our daily life! We should not allow ourselves to forget to apply our knowledge of science in daily life.
