What tires to get?

After 50,000miles my original tires almost worn. I tried tirerack.com and they do not care original tires anymore. So what cont tires will be right replacment? I'm thinking about
Continental ContiExtremeContact for everyday drive in California with speed not exceeding 65m/h. Any suggestions?

Edit: just forgot to add that the car has V8 engine.

I don't believe you have snow, but even if you do, for summer tires, I use Goodyear Eagle F1. I have them on three of my cars - E430 Sport, 300SL, C280 Sport. Love them.

I live in New York City so with 4 seasons I opted for the Bridgestone Turanza

It was rated high in wet/dry driving, comfort and spirited driving, and they didnt break the bank.

Good luck with your selection!

My suggestion would be Avon all season tires from tirerack.com. I have had them for about 2 yrs now in North Dakota and I got to tell you, the best tire for the buck I have had.

2002 E320 4matic 92K (bought 12/20/06). 2000 E430 4matic (RIP 12/9/06) :(
i had conti's on my e430 (contiProcontact) and i liked them - quiet, smooth ride, and handled rain & snow real well). then i had pirelli's on my e320 i just bought in december....they were a much better handling tire all around but they didn't handle the snow as well, and i've never been one to want to deal with two sets of tires, so i went with conti's again when i had to get new tires (same ones, contiprocontact) and love 'em.

Agreed. I have ContiProContacts. They're great for freeway driving. If you're driving fast on twisting roads, I'd use different tires (and a different car).

Thanks for responses. It seems I'll select Conti's. Indeed we have no snow (except one time of large hail), however we drive for skiing ocasionally. So feeling more confident is important.

Keep in mind that we were talking about the ContiProContacts, not ContiExtremeContacts. The two are entirely different classes of tire.

I see. I am not sure that putting Pro will right, because they lower rated than W. I'm not going to drive so fast however it can be sales point. So what's bad about Extreme?

I use ContiProContacts too and like them. My dealer put them on right before I bought it. If you want OEM, you can always call MBUSA (which I did) and ask them what the MB recommended tires were for your car when it was new. If the precise model is not available, they told me to ask a dealer what replaced it and it should be OK to use the "new and improved" version.

I have been a Goodyear Eagle fan for a lot of years and I have also heard that those F1 are good but they are pretty expensive. On my last MB ('98 E430) I had the Goodyear Assurance Comfort Tread (not exactly cheap either) but I didn't have the car long enough to really rate them. Those puppies have an 80,000 mile warranty!

Goodyear, using the same technology as the Comfort Tread, also makes a Triple Tread that I like the looks of. I might try a set of those on another car, and if I like them, might also try them on the Benz.

Good Luck!

There's nothing wrong with the ContiExtremeContacts. I wanted to clarify that fju2112 and I (and now Musikmann) were not talking about them, that's all.

Compared to the ContiProContact, the ContiExtremeContact is more performance oriented, so you would expect more noise, harder ride, and shorter tread life but better handling. The extremes might be better in snow.

I think the V speed rating (149 MPH) of the pros compared to the W speed rating (168 MPH) of the extremes is trivial on a car that is speed limited to 130 MPH and "for everyday drive in California with speed not exceeding 65m/h." Speed ratings are only loosely related to handling capabilities at normal (in the USA) speeds.
